I was trying to organize music lessons for my kids the other day when I was suddenly struck with the thought that I, too, could take lessons? I could.. play the instrument I always wanted to play? And actually practice it and care about it because it would be my choice, not something foisted on me.

One of the great joys of my adult life has been realizing that I can just pick up a new skill every so often, take a fun little class in it weekly for a year or two, and simply enjoy meeting people and getting medium proficient and not attempting to become professional in it at all!

Progress on my raccoon star painting. At this stage I’m still defining texture, shading, and what I refer to as “reflective shading”. It’s where I glaze colors like purples or greens over areas because I want those colors to be present in those shadows. I’m still only 1/2 way done at this stage.

One thing I haven't seen folks write about about Power Rangers Green is the fact that Mirella, Tommy's descendant, signs instead of speaking. @paulallor.bsky.social wanted to create a character who is noticeably neurodivergent-- Mirella can hear, but she uses ASL to talk to her family.

Mirella, a teenaged girl with turquoise hair, signing "whatever" Mirella, a teenaged girl with turquoise hair, signing "team" while talking with Tommy Oliver and Goldar (a blue ape monster)

Whenever I go to bed having left buckets of berries on the table, come morning there are berries all over the floor of my house. My cat, who is of course forbidden from the table and knows it, knows nothing about how this happens.

I want to read the thing all on my own like a grownup and make my own notes and draw my own conclusions. Reading is the joy of the thing. I like reading and thinking. I don’t want to know what an algorithm wants to present as useful and I REALLY don’t like robot errors.

And for the really bad news? They've put a target on VPNs. Sites are required to identify (and age-verify) any US citizen, regardless of whether they're using a VPN. In fact, the default is to get the ID and biometrics of EVERYONE unless you can somehow prove their not a US citizen.

"VPNs are a privacy and security tool used by millions of internet users every day, and their use should not be treated as suspect. It is particularly galling that the SCREEN Act forces users who intentionally take steps to protect their privacy to identify themselves."

i did not know that being trans was a possibility until my late teens. we have informed consent now instead of RLE. we can prevent HIV. mental health treatment has come leaps and bounds. there are a million medical improvements, period

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

It's gotten so much easier to start learning so many more languages, you used to be limited to the 3-5 major languages that a local bookstore or educational institution had decided it was worth making available, and now you can just like, look things up in hundreds of them
