Novak et al. discover that dietary serine impacts whether hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) prioritize hair growth or skin repair after injury. HFSCs gauge metabolic stress using the ISR and accelerate re-epithelialization while delaying hair regeneration when serine-deprived. These findings suggest new metabolic and pharmacologic strategies to enhance wound repair.
