Just your average queer scientist. Wife, mom, teacher, anti-fascist. Astrophysicist turned math professor. I solve nonlinear PDEs for food.

Damn Yeah. We can love the promise of our country. We can love the good and build better. "I love America more than any other country in the world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually"—James Baldwin

The reason there is lower "ROI" from a college degree now than in 1970s is women made up about 40% of the college population in 1970 and over 60% now... and the five top fields women go into (teaching, nursing, social work, librarianship, arts/nonprofit administration) are all underpaid.

How many times must we say this? AI* software does not “go rogue” any more than your printer “got religion” when it stopped working Sunday. Software does not have intent or agency. People do. And this feels like some people might be exposed to liability. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/t...

Months before OpenAI’s artificial intelligence went rogue, two employees raised an alarm with top executives. They were ignored.

In emails, the employees said they worried that OpenAI’s newest artificial intelligence models were not being appropriately monitored during testing to gauge the technology’s sophistication and to secure the models, according to messages viewed by The New York Times.

These precautions aren’t paranoia. They’re lessons passed from mothers to daughters about navigating a world where women can face harassment, stalking, assault, and violence simply for existing. The responsibility should be on all of us to challenge the behaviors that create that danger.

Women have spent generations changing their behaviour to stay safe from men. Don't walk home after dark.
Cover your drink. Don't fall asleep at the party. Keep one headphone out.
Carry your keys between your fingers.
Text when you get home. Let him down gently. Don't be too friendly, but don't be too rude. Give him a fake number.
Have an exit plan. Screenshot the threats before blocking him.
Here's a radical idea: maybe the people creating the danger should be the ones expected to change their fucking behaviour?!

On the *same day* the Cornell Seven drugged and raped Jane Doe, Cornell banned four students (including the President of Cornell JVP) from campus for three years for nonviolent, pro-Palestine protests. The same Cornell officials let the rapists off with apology essays.

No true scientist will outsource the fun of the creative process to a machine. We must focus on finding and eradicating the science operators who will stop at nothing to get more recognition & power. The impostors can be identified. We need to rely more on the good old human interactions.

European Research Council (ERC)@erc.europa.eu · yesterday

Research evaluation faces growing pressure: demand for competitive research funding is rising, while AI is rapidly changing how proposals can be written and assessed. In this context, the ERC & Science Europe had a workshop with research funding and performing organisations from 5 continents.

Gobsmacked by the elite levels of not knowing ball in the Senate today, thinking an NBA team is called the Hawkeyes then, refusing to Google it, then accusing a guy of treason because you didn’t know the Iowa Lady Hawkeyes aren’t in the NBA. Somehow I don’t trust these people to Save Girls Sports.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

This Cornell gang r*ape case has me wanting to burn down everything. An ESSAY?! For drugging and r*aping a woman for SEVEN HOURS and advertising it on the fraternity group chat? And no one stopped it, called security, did a damn thing? ARE YOU FCKING KIDDING ME?

On this day in 1994, the Clinton administration's heathcare reform plan was declared "dead" by Congress. Over 30 years later, the US is still the only industrialized country without universal healthcare. This should be a national outrage.

THE DEMS NEED TO OPPOSE AI! In a nutshell AI is about doing our thinking for us - that is a Fascist idea. Why go to university when you have AI? Why use the library when you have AI? Why read books when AI will do summaries for you? Teachers are already noticing our IQ and vocabulary are dropping.

I think we need a law assigning liability for the actions of agentic programs to the companies themselves. They're obviously trying to cement the idea that these programs aren't controllable or predictable.
