Republicans tried to appeal Obamacare like 200 times, knowing full well that Obama would veto it, to signal to their base and voters broadly that “we’re trying to do stuff but da president won’t let us!!” Democrats meanwhile are like 🥺 we can only vote on stuff mister trump wants

Oliver Willis@owillis.bsky.social · yesterday

this is shockingly stupid. if donald trump is vetoing things @schatz.bsky.social it means democrats are pushing GOOD THINGS

now here's the thing: it is of course completely reasonable for someone to be skeptical of cars on the ground that they are *dangerous*, but anyone who says they are *useless* is obviously very dumb AI denialists seem not to have grasped this distinction yet

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net · 2w ago

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

Another person who is good at deception of this nature: Donald Trump. Trump is a moron with no special insight into humans, but he’s capable of saying stupid and wrong stuff confidently (in part because he’s detached from reality) and that’s quite literally all you need to sucker half the world.

Again, what I want you to realize is that THIS IS NOT REALLY EXPERT MANIPULATION. Elizabeth Holmes did not succeed at fraud by telling convincing hard-to-detect lies. She succeeded at fraud by telling big, dumb, obvious lies that rich people wanted to believe. This is how 95% of fraud works!

James Downie@jamescdownie.bsky.social · 2w ago

There is extensive documentary evidence that she knowingly misled people, including by her own admission! (www.ms.now/opinion/eliz...)

Trial evidence and investigative media reports showed that Holmes knew her machine was not producing accurate or reliable results and that she covertly used traditional machines to produce results her machine could not — and passed off many of those results as her own machine’s performance. To woo investors, she falsely claimed that the technology was used on the battlefield in Afghanistan. She admitted in court that she personally affixed the logos of big pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer to reports that would falsely indicate that those companies had endorsed Theranos’ technology. She has admitted that her company advertised her blood diagnostics machine as being able to do more than 200 tests — while it could only do 12. Not only did Holmes rob investors of huge sums of money, she also gave tens of thousands of patients incorrect diagnostic tests that had dangerous real-life consequences for them.

I feel like the AI consciousness debate is getting too "weed smoke-filled dorm room" for me. yeah it's kinda interesting but it's hard to really go anywhere with it in a way that feels like you're making progress.

remember the world cup, when you had tons of folks visiting the united states for the first time and having just the best time of their life? it ruled! we should encourage that kind of thing!

Anyone else feel like everyone is just nuts nowadays? I'm not even talking about the obvious candidates but everyday people who get worked up into a defensive frenzy about the most insane things and can't fathom that they might be wrong or that someone else might think differently.

Something very important to figure out before Jan 20, 2029 is whether, when a new President is inaugurated, they will control the computer system at GSA (i.e. doors to federal buildings) and Treasury payments system or if those systems will be somehow in the hands of DOGE cronies

hard to think of anything that better sums up the modern Republican Party than this note right here

This is right. The issue is that LLMs are at best a $50 billion/year revenue type business and they've invested in it like it's going to be $500 billion/year in revenue or more. The mismatch is potentially trillions in capex overspend which is enough to cause a deep recession when the bubble pops.

Better Things Are Possible@internethippo.bsky.social · 3w ago

I think it's closer to the truth that LLMs *can* save time on *some tasks* which can be valuable *if* you monitor them and check their output. But that doesn't get you a trillion dollars so they have to squint into the middle distance and say stupid sci fi bullshit instead

While I’m making people mad by claiming consumers get what they want, a lot of consumers really do like big houses with no lot lines in the exurbs. Good urban form exists in lower quantities than demand for it but I think exurban housing has a very high demand and that’s why there’s so much of it.
