Most of the federal agency science budgets goes into the salaries of students and trainees, and the decision to take that money and instead give it to industry and already rich venture capitalists is fundamentally a decision to have many fewer scientists and do far less science in the future.

For the non-scientists, 3% means that Dr. Shepard's proposal (over 50 pages of documents attesting to whether you are qualified to do the work & your research plan) was reviewed by others in his field & they gave it a score that is in the top 3% of all proposals scored. Yet it might not be funded 🫠

I am still waiting on whether a 3% scored R01 will be funded at the NIA (reviewed in Jan) and even the NoA for my funded R01 non-competitive renewal is a month late 😭. And this is preclinical science that shouldn’t have any “dirty” words!

Scientific American is being sold to LabX Media, publisher of Discover: group.springernature.com/gp/group/med... They've fired me and other union staff, ahead of June 26 vote ratification. My rates are suddenly more reasonable, if you need editing or reporting - Argonaut2026@gmail.com
