IMO, "Influencer" in the ten-years-ago sense was really a LOT of jobs (spokesmodel/copywriter/etc.) but now it's morphing, at least in part, into "intentionally annoying person" which feels worse.

In the United States, on January 20, 2025, the air, the food, the medicine, the water were all as clean and pure and safe as they have ever been in this country. Yeah, sure, there were and are real problems, and our army of nerds in lab coats devoted to solving them was the envy of the world.
The anti-lockdown revisionism sure is something. I had small children during this period so I am agonizingly aware that schooling suffered, my kids suffered, but I also did not want to catch covid & maybe die, or for my kids to die, or for them to pass on covid to a teacher, who also might die
I have no idea what to do with this Covid revisionism. It feels like the bad kind of group therapy where you help each other ignore facts. We don't have to go *that* far back in the social media timelines to prove how fucked up it was. We were so scared we were scrubbing eggs and baking the mail.

My SIL is deeply worried about solar farms removing koala habitat due to astroturfed anti solar campaigns in Australia, and it is quite maddening to discuss with her because this sort of discourse is lodged in her brain
David Roberts@volts.wtf · 7d agoI genuinely don't know what to do about this. In our diseased information environment, one MAGA-adjacent "influencer" can do more to shape public opinion than mountains of studies or facts. Where are the pro-clean-energy influencers to counter this shit?
Just took my adhd kid camping and mountain biking and fed them lots of wholesome organic food and they still have adhd so uh now what

"Covid czar"? He's a physician-scientist and immunologist who pursued solutions during a global pandemic and gave us the truth. He's the former director of the NIAID and one of the most cited scientists in journals for 19 years. You may be spineless, but he isn't.
This is my theory too; I think beyond the actual scale of the deaths (which was bad!) the psychological impact of the fear and uncertainty is something most people refuse to acknowledge

Long ago I worked in magazines. A graphic designer, as a joke, put in "ROMEO IS A DICK" about another designer as placeholder text in a photo spread (instead of lorem ipsum) Except it didn't get removed before the spread went to print. We only found out when an advertiser complained

I also think it.....doesn't even matter? I can't say I ever sit there thinking about my own puberty, I remember it as a time of various highs and lows, like other periods of my life, not saying every woman's the same but I really don't hold those years as particularly special, to be honest?

I don't think we need to declare that public drug use is fine actually to have compassion for addicts & want to help them? Should we not find it a little shocking to see people who cannot walk upright, who are stumbling into traffic, who have soiled themselves, who pass out in the hot sun?

I enjoy romance as much as the next girlie but like. The flattening of "books women will like" to romance does such a disservice to women readers, writers, and the genres of romance, fantasy, etc
