It is impossible to overstate the extent to which people who consume exclusively right wing media have had the part of their brains that contain Occam's razor sanded down to a tiny little nubbin.

Just spitballing here, but maybe it's not an optimal situation when one of the two major political parties in a democracy turns their political operations over to fame-seeking randos who publicize that their political ideology aligns 88% with Hitler's.

It's strange to document all this and not explicitly pin Trump's violence fetish as being the obvious number one contributing factor. Just because his thirst for violent retribution in politics has blown back on him on occasion doesn't absolve him of blame.

Threats of Political Violence Have America’s Elected Officials Living in Fear (Gift Article)

A Times investigation has found that violent threats have become a new normal among public officials, reshaped private lives, cost millions in security and pushed people out of office.

nytimes.com

Also not mentioned in the piece: Republicans joking about the brutal attack on Paul Pelosi, the blanket pardon of January 6th participants, no matter how violent their crimes. This dark atmosphere didn't just suddenly manifest of bipartisan causes.

God, this all day. I had a guy calling me a pedophile and threatening to kill me *on his public Twitter account, using his government name, under which he is barred in IIRC Indiana* because I wrote a positive review of a movie the QAnon freaks had decided was a secret pedo project

Look, I'm not trying to be unsympathetic to the politicians in the article. But non-pols get these threats daily. Woman got doxxed and their kids threatened for disclosing they were harassed by a serial predator. I got an artisanal hand-written death threat mailed to my apartment. Deal with it.

People are rightly horrified by this. But it's basically just Trump talking about Russia / Ukraine the exact same way (same political and moral import) that every US politician and media person talks about Israel / Palestine. Support, defend, fund the aggressor; blame, undermine the victim.

Wow — listen to these new comments from Trump. Thanking Putin, trashing Zelenskyy, characterizing Russia as eager for peace and Ukraine as intransigent. The mask is totally off.

Some enterprising hacker collective could test this: throw some vibecoded OpenAI Astra & Claude Opus bullshit together, train it on stats about student loans & what would happen if they went away, & then instruct it to free up spending power for millions of americans, & just like, see what happens…

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com · 2d ago

If I built an AI lab and it went rogue and deleted all student loan information, I'm betting they'd suddenly figure out how to prosecute me.

America is not a Christian nation or a Muslim nation. It’s a secular republic where freedom of religion means freedom for everyone, including the freedom to reject religion entirely. No religion gets to claim ownership of our government.

This pinned post has been updated! Banned Books Week annoys me because so much attention comes to this crucial constitutional issue for only 5-7 days. In an era when our freedoms are being attacked and books–and the people they represent–are disappearing, it's necessary to fight every single day.

A massive thread of resources, history, information, and material to help you not only fight and understand book censorship but protect the incredible democratic institutions of public libraries and public education. This is updated regularly!

Do we really need to explain to people that it is really, REALLY important to read to young children? Like, you, personally, need to read to your child - your voice, your face, your hand gestures, your lap, your arms, your closeness. What kind of parent doesn't know this in their bones?

1) Putin doesn't have diesel to spare. 2) Diesel is cover for lifting sanctions. 3) Putin's statement sounds like he's offering an Iran escape hatch, which I've been predicting. 4) Half of the MASSIVE bribes Putin is offering now don't exist. 5) But he does mention security coop -- Kash.

at a HarperCollins AI "brainstorming" session, staff say they raised legal, ethical, and environmental concerns and were told that's “the cost of doing business.” The employee portal was updated to say AI's environmental impact is "a small part of most individuals’ total digital carbon footprint."

Liliana seems to be getting shit for this, but she's not wrong. You don't need to be actively executing people like Arizona's current Dem gov and AG, to enable a system in which executions occur. Oh and Arizona's current Dem governor and AG have executed 3 people and are seeking a 4th warrant.

One more thing about the death penalty before going offline. As disgusted as we should be by Trump's bloodlust, we should NOT lose sight of the CENTRAL role of Democrats in upholding, expanding, and enabling this system that seems to horrify so many people right now. It really cannot be said enough.
