absolutely wild to see people out here saying that it is responsibility of peer reviewers to check for hallucinated references. it is hard enough to persuade people to read articles and provide reviews. expecting them to spend hours cross reffing literature is unreal.

It wasn’t the biggest story yesterday, but the NHS in England hit its intermediate target that 65% of patients should be waiting 18 weeks or less for elective care by Mar26. That’s after big recent improvements from 61.5% in Jan to 65.3% in March. So how was this achieved?🧵

CSWEP strongly condemns Larry Summers’ behavior as revealed in the email correspondence with the late Jeffrey Epstein. While abuse of power in the economics profession is not new, rarely has the intent behind such abuse been so clearly stated.

Actually @therestpolitics.bsky.social, make that a topic of your conversation please: why is it so hard to make people outside of UK Higher Education see how dire and dangerous the structurally failing sector is? Local economies about to sink; R&D all but stagnated; education blandified.

Genuine question: how do we break through this? Some journalists are waking up but seeming can’t reach these parents (you’d think they’d be our most interested audience…) Is it really all trying to get @therestpolitics.bsky.social to cover the structural issues with #UKHE? #SaveHE

With electrification so central to net-zero & delivering 60% of emissions cuts by 2040, top CCC recommendation is to make electricity prices cheaper (Weirdly, most news coverage focused on low-carbon choices eg diet, despite the much greater role for other solutions) 10/10

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.

Cool RCT on air purifiers -> test scores in China. Air purifiers on day of test improved scores by 0.1sd! Reduction in indoor PM2.5 from purifiers was ~20ug in their setting. So, effect would prob be smaller at avg US PM levels, but maybe larger on wildfire smoke day. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
