Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

478 black-and-white doodles of bony fishes. The first fish is a coelacanth; the last an ocean sunfish.

The waye to figure out yf you are talkinge wyth a cat on the ynternet ys to aske the person you are talkinge to "have you been fedde" and yf thei saye "no my bowle ys alwayes emptye" BINGO you are talkinge wyth a catte on the internet. The Purring Test.

The Society of Authors has withdrawn from the ill-conceived concession to the dark side that was the "ethical GenAI" charter because of the mass and vocal outrage of authors. Publishers need to be made afraid of this level of anger too.

you know, it’s not some Great Compromise, and I despise that rhetoric. Trans and nb people and all the ordinary decent people who think they’re fine are co-opted, brutalised & morally injured. Transphobes & bigots aren’t happy, because nothing will satiate that appetite for violence.

I'm so excited to see this in the print issue - consider buying it, or, if you're attached to the kind of institution that still subscribes to such things, consider asking them to subscribe to the Boston Review?

Haven’t read the essay readers are calling “gorgeous,” “masterful,” “spectacularly good”—“damn fine writing” & “one of the best things I’ve read in ages”? Here it is — online early from our forthcoming issue, @kristingrogan.bsky.social on Sylvia Plath, poetic truth, & letting the unthinkable in:

Thinking a lot about how a person fights the fact that the state has made them a second class citizen without internalising a belief that they are, in fact, second class. On the things we have to keep alive is the knowledge that trans people deserve the world - just as every person does.

We are second class citizens. There’s no other way to put it. And that’s a very hard reality to adjust to. And in some level, psychologically I don’t want to adjust to it. But that brings its own problems.

NEW: NHS England know the harm they are doing to trans patients. Their internal assessment reportedly warns of corridor care, treatment delays, outing, discrimination and healthcare avoidance being among the risks identified from their new policy www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

a little dispute with the Secretary of State could help in making clear it's her responsibility not to just ape whatever managers & consultants say. And UCU again voted for that. So let's do that dispute now.

"It found UOW and five other universities appeared to overstate their financial problems and went too far in restructures and staff cuts." Actual parliamentary enquiry! Not just copy-pasting management narratives! CAN #UKHE PLEASE DO THIS NOW RATHER THA IN HINDSIGHT? www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

The committee recommended banning universities from publicly using their own adjusted figures to justify restructures when they differ from their audited financial statements.

Where universities do use adjusted figures, they would need to disclose material differences from their audited results.

The NTEU wants all six universities to publish the models, assumptions, consultancy reports and council papers used to justify their restructures.

Kent Monkman‘s public art sculpture “Colony”, a tribute to beavers and the giant ancient beavers of Cree stories from the Pleistocene, in Toronto; I’m very into the beaver playing a hand drum and singing.

I have now been in rooms with the people in charge of the curriculum review who literally told me I was very persuasive and made good points, and that they’re sorry that people will burn out. But they have to do what they said they were going to do. Completely irresponsible & unaccountable.

One thing I noticed in our recent ‘restructuring’ (loathe to use the executive’s neutral wording) was that there was little rationale or logic; instead there was some hidden strategic decision making not available to staff. Nothing we said or did seemed to change an already decided outcome.
