I feel like this needs to be emphasized more. AI is not sentient. It is a program reliant on LLMs to mimic “thinking,” and whenever an AI program performs a function the company wants to disavow for PR reasons, it’s suddenly “rogue.”

4a. This isn’t rogue. It is a model following the instructions given to it. The genie isn’t to blame for fulfilling a wish in a way you don’t specify.

Trump's Border Wall Construction Destroys 6,500-Year-Old Arizona Geoglyph – Older Than Stonehenge

Arizona's 6,500-year-old Las Playas Intaglio, the oldest dated geoglyph in the Americas, was irreparably damaged by border wall construction in April 2026.

I’ve seen reports estimating that the Iran War is costing us $1 billion a day. Over ten years that’s $3.6 trillion. So how about we trade free college for a stupid war?

We're a society plagued by bad faith and widespread indulgence of it. Say "free speech" while unsubtly meaning "I say whatever I want, you have to listen, and you can't say anything I don't like back." Voila, a Free Speech Crisis! Here, anti-civility groups say "civility." And the money flows in.

some descriptive statistics here on the civility industrial complex on college campuses that I haven’t seen analyzed before www.uncivilcollective.org/resources

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/kQdKbY1

I take a similar approach with my students, and it’s just an unfortunate reminder that higher ed has been reduced to noting more than job training and not an opportunity to become a well-rounded and informed individual whose personality can be more than their job.

One reason to learn about things outside your major is so that you have something to talk about with people at parties and on dates. No amount of money will make up for you being a crushing bore. History majors learn this early but I guess it takes other people longer.

This is a revelation to me. Are most history depts not already "service depts"? I assumed they were. In any given year I might teach 500 students, most of them in the intro surveys, and maybe 25 of those 500 are history majors. But it's important to note how admins set these classes up to fail.

"Unlike large math or physics courses, humanities courses are often best delivered as discussion seminars, which place a natural cap on their size . . . if done well, there will in fact be a need to hire more faculty to lead small-group seminar discussions." www.chronicle.com/article/the-...
