Omelas already exists: no need to build it or choose it. We already live here –in the narrow, foul, dark prison we let our ignorance, fear, and hatred build for us and keep us in, here in the splendid, beautiful city of life...

I’m so glad to hear of all these bookstores refusing to sell to these vampires. It’s one thing to say that people are allowed to do whatever they want to things they’ve legally paid for but that treats books like any other commodity rather than precious repositories of human knowledge and wisdom.

"I don't understand why you, a fantasy writer, don't appreciate the value of making bargains with the fae."
Every now and then someone takes a run at me along the lines of "I don't understand why you, a scifi writer, don't appreciate 'AI'," and I'm all, motherfucker, it's *because* I'm a science fiction writer I have the positions I have, how many times do we have to fucking yell "torment nexus," my dude
I will shout from the rooftops that AI can't create art. It just can't. It can make content, but content isn't art. And we’re in an age where we’re told we’re making content and not art - and I think part of the pushback is reminding everyone what ART is and saying you're MAKING ART & NOT CONTENT.
can we sometimes be asking "what qualifies this guy to speak on this subject?" or has that ship sailed
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
If pocket calculators regularly and randomly gave you incorrect answers to your queries like ChatGPT does, we would have left the technology behind, not insisted that 2+2=5 is HERE TO STAY, BABY.
Funny, that’s what we thought about pocket calculators in 1974
I know they say “ignore other creatives’ schedules, find one that works for you” but this one sounds pretty great
obsessed with Ian Flemming's daily schedule - swim - brunch - write 1500 words no edits just freestyle - lobster hunting - pink gin - lunch - siesta - sit in garden - another swim - 500 more words - "a couple of powerful drinks" - dinner - scrabble with wife - sleep
Hey everyone, apparently Ingram is sending physical books to be scanned for AI by default (😡😡😡) so please make sure you opt out: www.ingramcontent.com/page/ai-opt-...

150,000 marched yesterday in London for trans rights. Opened the Sky News app. Scrolled and scrolled. Nothing. BBC News app. Nothing. Guardian app. Nothing. This is what actual silencing looks like.
Just a reminder that you can turn all this annoying AI nonsense off in Acrobat! Just go into your preferences and it will never again try to summarise, say, your own book for you. Or a contract you really do need to read every word of.

Can Attacking A Writers Festival Turn This Man Into A Right-Wing Star?
What do Mark Latham, Sam Bamford and even Hollywood actress Emily Blunt's sister have in common? All of them got caught up in one man's campaign against a writers festival in the last few weeks.

No matter what the proposed session, a speaker attempting to buy their way onto literary festival programs is a slippery slope ... a slap in the face for writers, disrespecting festival teams, and out-of-touch with audiences. (This is from a paywalled article published yesterday by Lamestreampod)
A Chinese shoe manufacturer made this video to show how indestructible their shoes are and y'all I'm much too gay for this 🥵
