I haven't posted about this in a while, but I made 2 free creative writing courses: the Couch to 80k Writing Boot Camp & the 100 Day Writing Challenge. Each session, you listen to a short podcast & do a 10 minute exercise. The timer is included in the episode. www.timclarepoet.co.uk/couchto80kwr...

Years ago, I came up with a taxonomy of creative writing teaching styles. It's a series of archetypes I've encountered over decades, in myself & others. You can think of it as the creative writing teaching Fighter Select screen. Here goes:

A cynical person might suggest that the petitions system was created as a mechanism to redirect the public's energy away from action that could meaningfully change anything

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

“Well I’m a man and I never know when I can say something without being accused on mansplaining!” Okay it’s real simple so let me explain. Does the post contain the words “I would like advice” or “can somebody please explain”? If it does, go ahead! If it doesn’t, do not go ahead.

The silver lining is they are almost always failsons who relative to the potential gains they could make are costing their families money and the industrial system of sport they belong to is phenomenally good at wringing rich morons of their money to force it back into circulation.

Its worth emphasising, racing is very much a rich man's sport drivers are always the kids of industrialists, economists, investors, bankers, that sort you should never consider them heroes they come from the ruling class

This is almost poetic in its capacity to symbolise how fascism is destined to repeatedly re-emerge from the harms and destruction of capitalist expansion, and will keep doing so until those underlying conditions change. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

a university is not for generating profit, it provides cultural enrichment via weird little gremlin people who love visigoths or haikus, and very occasionally a scientist who figures out faster than light travel

As a prof this is how I dealt with the person in the group project who everyone else complained privately about because they did no work come presentation time: “Nice work, everyone! For the Q& A, why don’t you start us off [Obvious Fuckup Name]! Can you tell us a little about [creative choice]?”

You are not arguing with a fascist incel chud. What is happening is not an argument. You are not in an argument with them. They specifically derive pleasure from seeing you acting as if they are arguing with you, as if you are both having an argument.

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”
