Writing fiction in any genre should be a purely human exercise. If you use AI to generate *any* dialog, story ideas, character shapes, *anything* creative, you're betraying the very concept of artistic expression. This is a bright flashing red line for me. www.wired.com/story/the-bi...
‘Everyone Is Doing It’: The Truth About AI in Hollywood
Puck’s Matthew Belloni says AI has quietly become part of everyday filmmaking. The battle now isn’t whether Hollywood will use the technology—it’s who controls what’ll come next.

when people say "do your own research" they generally mean "do not trust anyone with any relevant training or experience"
I'm a full Professor of Immunology and fully vaccinated. I didn't get vaccinated out of obedience, but after decades of studying the immune system and evaluating all evidence. Calling that "lack of critical thinking" is not an argument. It's ideology masked as pretend intellect.

This is what I have to say to all of you who complain about Phish singing "Everything's Right" by saying "everything isn't right, how can Trey sing this!":
Every time someone responds to an obviously normative-aspirational claim ("this not who we are", "this is not America", etc) with some I'm-very-radical descriptive rebuttal ("er actually America has always done <similar bad stuff>") an angel dies. Like, no joke, dead. Direct causal result of this.
With SARS-CoV-2 origins back in the news due to the GOP being complete assholes to Fauci, I thought 2 or 3 of you might be interested in this 2023 thread I posted on Mastodon. I mostly stand by it, though I think the chances of a lab leak are even less likely now (probably less than 1%):

All the Fauci stuff is a modern day version of the POW/MIA stuff after Vietnam - a way to try to rewrite the history of a huge failure of conservative ideology to be instead a story about how liberals and foreigners stabbed us in the back.

When the Argonath first appeared on screen in The Fellowship of the Ring a woman in the theater yelled "Would you look at that!" I still say it every time I watch.
Got me thinking.. What's the strongest reaction you've seen an audience member have to a scene in a cinema? During the birthday party scene in SIGNS I saw a whole row of young women literally throw their popcorn in the air like a cartoon.
This is a pretty good idea. Like some sort of center where the focus is on controlling disease?

RIP Sam Neill. The wordless acting he does in Jurassic Park when Alan Grant first sees a living and breathing dinosaur after dedicating his life to studying their bones is absolute perfection. Sure, it doesn't end well, but every scientist is chasing that moment when nature reveals herself.
Jurassic Park: Meeting the dinosaurs HD CLIP
What’s happening in this Jurassic Park movie clip? Alan (Sam Neill from Peaky Blinder) and Ellie (Laura Dern from Marriage Story and Little Women) are visiting the park, when suddenly Alan sees a huge Brachiosaurus. He's speechless, and as soon as Ellie sees him too, they both can't believe it. The small group of privileged people chosen to explore the park is ecstatic at the spectacle before them. Hammond (Richard Attenborough from Gandhi) decides to show them how he developed this wonderful park. Rent or buy Jurassic Park here: https://amzn.to/2V1XknJ What’s the Jurassic Park movie about? In Steven Spielberg's huge blockbuster, paleontologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill from Peaky Blinders) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern from Marriage Story and Little Women) and mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum from Independence Day) are part of a group chosen to visit a themed park situated on an island and populated by dinosaurs created from prehistoric DNA. While the creator, billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough from Gandhi), assures everyone that the place is safe, they discover the opposite when various predators start hunting. If students are simply uninterested in the core bargain of a class like this, it’s hard to know what to do. You teach the material because you think it’s important they know it; they don’t give a shit, but want the credential; and the university wants their money. Your main option is “pretend”.

Whenever you see the 2030 Winter Olympics described as "gender equal" in the coming years, just make sure you remember that it's only cause the IOC decided they would rather drop AN ENTIRE SPORT (nordic combined) instead of adding a women's event.
I don't care if it wasn't popular, Nordic Combined was one of the original Winter Olympic sports, and for the IOC to cut the men's competition completely instead of adding a women's competition is a travesty. My heart goes out to all the athletes.
