Writing fiction in any genre should be a purely human exercise. If you use AI to generate *any* dialog, story ideas, character shapes, *anything* creative, you're betraying the very concept of artistic expression. This is a bright flashing red line for me. www.wired.com/story/the-bi...

‘Everyone Is Doing It’: The Truth About AI in Hollywood

Puck’s Matthew Belloni says AI has quietly become part of everyday filmmaking. The battle now isn’t whether Hollywood will use the technology—it’s who controls what’ll come next.

With SARS-CoV-2 origins back in the news due to the GOP being complete assholes to Fauci, I thought 2 or 3 of you might be interested in this 2023 thread I posted on Mastodon. I mostly stand by it, though I think the chances of a lab leak are even less likely now (probably less than 1%):

All the Fauci stuff is a modern day version of the POW/MIA stuff after Vietnam - a way to try to rewrite the history of a huge failure of conservative ideology to be instead a story about how liberals and foreigners stabbed us in the back.

no I don’t need to know the story of a pilot inside the asteroids ship, or what the asteroids are threatening, or any of that. that is not the point. I am the pilot and after about five minutes I have died three times in space. that is “Asteroids.”

RIP Sam Neill. The wordless acting he does in Jurassic Park when Alan Grant first sees a living and breathing dinosaur after dedicating his life to studying their bones is absolute perfection. Sure, it doesn't end well, but every scientist is chasing that moment when nature reveals herself.

If students are simply uninterested in the core bargain of a class like this, it’s hard to know what to do. You teach the material because you think it’s important they know it; they don’t give a shit, but want the credential; and the university wants their money. Your main option is “pretend”.

woof ≈80% of assignments this summer term have essentially been just raw chatgpt/claude output, including assignments that required designing stuff in illustrator/affinity/canva. The battle is lost for asynchronous online courses.

Whenever you see the 2030 Winter Olympics described as "gender equal" in the coming years, just make sure you remember that it's only cause the IOC decided they would rather drop AN ENTIRE SPORT (nordic combined) instead of adding a women's event.

I don't care if it wasn't popular, Nordic Combined was one of the original Winter Olympic sports, and for the IOC to cut the men's competition completely instead of adding a women's competition is a travesty. My heart goes out to all the athletes.
