People say scientists are serious but marine biologists will spend hours quietly sitting around tables drawing on styrofoam cups and then tying said cups to deep sea submarines Because ocean pressure will squeeze the air from the cups And we are but human & we want tiny cup

A hand holding four shrunken styrofoam cups the size of shot glasses. Two with jellyfish colored on them and two with black and white lines

A line that stayed with me from an old hiking book: > The safest place to store water in hot weather is in your body. People have died of dehydration with water still in their canteens. this isn't a metaphor for anything. finish your water bottle.

this is an AFFRONT to my people so let me tell you how you ACTUALLY do this. Five teabags. Boil a litre in kettle. Pour it over teabags in saucepan. Let steep for 15 minutes. Now I recommend adding some sugar and lemon juice at this point but not mandatory. Add three litres cool water. Fridge.

if you put five teabags in a litre bottle of water and stick it in the fridge RIGHT NOW... ...you will have some lovely iced tea ready by 2pm. just as you start thinking: "god it's so hot this afternoon i wish i had some iced tea"

🚨 New policy alert! 🚨 Wisconsin is giving up $2 billion in revenue so big tech can get a tax break while working-class Wisconsinites are getting stuck with higher bills. What if we spent that money on infrastructure that serves the entire state?

Wastewater data report the lowest national averages of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage in a couple of years, and low levels across regions. Recent levels are still higher than the true lows we saw with widespread precautions earlier in the pandemic, but they are getting surprisingly close. bit.ly/48byxo8

Graphic from The Sick Times sharing the latest COVID-19 trends for April 21, 2026. The graphic presents trends for three metrics: WastewaterSCAN category for SARS-CoV-2, which is “medium” (represented with a dark yellow color) and slightly decreasing (represented with a diagonal down arrow); CDC wastewater viral activity level for SARS-Cov-2, which is “very low*” (lighter yellow) and slightly decreasing; and CDC COVID-19 test positivity, which is low (lighter yellow) and slightly decreasing. Text below these metrics reads: “*CDC wastewater viral activity levels are calculated based on measurements in the last two years only. They do not account for the lower spread that could be possible with more widespread precautions.”Wastewater data from the CDC, WastewaterSCAN, and Biobot Analytics all report the lowest national averages of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage in a couple of years, and low levels across regions. For WWSCAN, which has the most reliable long-term data, this is the lowest national average since spring 2022. Recent levels are still higher than the true lows we saw with widespread precautions earlier in the pandemic, but they are getting surprisingly close.BA.3.2 (“Cicada”) remains a damper on this good news. The variant continues to grow globally, and children continue to be overrepresented in publicly-shared sequences, suggesting that they could be more susceptible. But it’s not a huge presence in U.S. data yet — in part because the CDC’s variant pages are now only updated once a month.
JAMA’s medical news vertical published a helpful explainer about Cicada this week, reinforcing that experts are concerned about the variant but having a hard time following it.Meanwhile, there are other causes for illness going around right now, even as we have passed the end of flu season. CDC testing data, as well as wastewater data from WWSCAN and Biobot, warn of higher levels of the respiratory pathogens human metapneumovirus (HMPV), rhinovirus, enterovirus and the gastrointestinal pathogens norovirus and rotavirus.
