Scenes from today’s walk at the Percy Priest Dam. Whenever the flood gates are open, I am reminded of a story about three men who planned to blow up the dam. Once destroyed, they expected the water to flow into and flood downtown Nashville. Once Broadway was flooded, they planned to dive into 1/3

Just did the math on how much protected bike lanes / a safe bike route on Gallatin Pike would improve my bike commute: I would save approximately 11 minutes each way, making it close to time-parity with driving on a good day. The route flattens by ~30% and gets far simpler. Details below:

Thinking about an errand I ran today: because it’s not safe to ride on Gallatin for 1.1 miles (1.7 km), I rode 3 miles (4.8 km) in mostly protected bike lanes. But I’m also very lucky in Nashville to even have a safe (if circuitous) route!!

"Cycling is a nice idea, but it will never work here" comes in so many variants. Snow, rain, wind, cold, warm, dry, humid, hilly, dense, spread, etc etc. What they have in common is that someone will state them as fact despite plenty of people cycling where there's snow, rain, wind, ...
