If we had the political will, just think of what we could accomplish in North America. We could have trains snaking the continent. It could be the easiest, most efficient, most affordable option providing good unionized jobs in manufacturing, maintenance & service, while reducing emissions.

Of course they do. We built this country with a railroad and Canadians have been complaining about VIA for eons. Not everyone wants to fly.

High speed rail in Canada is a good investment. It’s the kind of ambitious nation-building that actually makes Canada more resilient etc. No surprise, far-right Pierre Poilievre says he’d cancel it, saying it will go over budget. Spoiler—it will. Just like EVERY car highway does. But he likes those.
What our elected leaders don’t seem to understand is that public transportation IS sovereignty!! Public housing is sovereignty Affordable essentials is sovereignty When we have our needs met we are more resilient & less vulnerable to extremism.

One thing I'd like to see from the next presidency would be to appoint a special commission to prepare a report on the actual cost to defend the United States from attack. Not foreign wars. Just the cost to defend this country.
The future of transportation is electric rail. Whether our elected officials begin the infrastructure building process a hundred years ago or in the future, the math doesn’t change. Electric rail is the most economical & efficient way to transport people long distance from one place to another.

Langdon Grant@langdongrant.bsky.social · 6mo agoLiterally every major U.S. airline uses a *lot* of Canadian-made Bombardier regional jets in their fleets. So yeah, this should go over well with them.
Well into my eighth hour on this @viarailcanada.bsky.social train (which is outside Markham and not moving) from Ottawa to Toronto and wondering if we might be able to get regular-speed rail in this country.
It will never not be upsetting to me that New Brunswick had better intercity public transportation half a century ago than today. Our leaders should be ashamed & mortified.

Public transport investment usually has a return on investment of 4:1 (for every £1 invested, the economy grows by £4), but done well it can do even better than that Great example here

I am becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of viable public transit paired with astronomical car pricing. Car ownership is the new feudalism, designed to keep us in predatory debt traps as lifelong renters and I am not here for it.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social · 10mo agoI know I’ve said this more than once, and I know it’s really obvious, but taking the train between cities in Europe is just fantastic. So easy. One of the dumbest mistakes North America ever made, and continues to make, is doing so relatively little with trains. Train networks are nation-building.
trains are magic and it’s so embarrassing that the richest country in the history of the world is all “high speed rail? nah we don’t need it”
About a hundred or so years ago, people from Fredericton commuted to Marysville via train to work at the cotton mill, and vice versa. The train took fifteen minutes, from a station near where the Coffee Mill is now, to a station near where the apartments on Brunswick Street back onto the trail.
