Did you hear about the DC July 4 fireworks show? It promises 850,000 fireworks in 40 minutes. That's 354 per second. You'll miss up to 142 of them every time you blink. For your edutainment, I proudly present the nerdiest thing you will read about this dangerously absurd / absurdly dangerous event.

Three Hundred Fifty-Four Fireworks per Second — Chad M. Topaz

Organizers promise 850,000 fireworks in roughly 40 minutes over the National Mall this Saturday. I did what a mathematician does with a big number: I divided. It did not make the show look better.

Two dudes who were formed from the same mould in consecutive batches at the factory and are somehow completely unrelated

One of my strongest takeaways from the Bee this week is that it was a showcase for why critical thinking matters more than ever. So much of what the kids do up there isn’t rote memorization—it’s using their insane prep to solve words like puzzles (using etymology, patterns) in real time.

Great feat and congratulations but as a skill it is less necessary in the age of AI and automatic spell check. Kinda like the multiplication tables.

The music of Seinfeld, divorced from the show itself, is nothing short of disgusting. Imagine if the show didn’t exist but the music somehow did. Hearing it, your face would twist in angry revulsion

like a butterfly dropping into its grave, of course. a phrase we’ve all used and a very normal, relatable kind of image that conveys clear meaning. i’m always saying this. so beautiful, like a delicate butterfly croaking mid-air and gently floating into a tiny open bug grave at the insect cemetery.
