Likes words + pictures. Still here (in academia, thinking about contemporary lit, visual culture, & politics of aesthetics). Coined the phrase "It's Adam & Eve, not Adam & Jeeves" as a [bad] argument against labour exploitation.

friends, it has come to my attention that the 1962 Tove Jansson illustrated edition of The Hobbit has been reprinted in English for the first time

I have enormous respect and fondness for Steven Spielberg but what is with the Minority Report — Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull — War of the Worlds period special effects aesthetic of his movies? All blurry and hazy and weirdly off-putting, no? Or am I missing something?

A text box reads: 'The COVID Forecast is calculated from 3 equally weighted categories: 1) Current infections and spread; 2) Healthcare system impact; 3) Mortality. Within each category there is one sub-category for trends over the most recent week (Trends) and one sub-category for current parameter values relative to a specified baseline (Current values). Begging you, reporters everywhere: stop using this framing. Anyone anywhere at any time can have an underlying condition. That has only become more true as you decided to join the war on COVID on the side of COVID. People with fallible bodies—all of us—deserve to not shit themselves to death.

Breaking News: Two deaths in Michigan have been linked to cyclospora. Both people who had the parasite also had underlying health issues.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

These—I can hardly write the word, but I must—𝘵𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘴; these private receptacles of eight million urban guts, tucked away in our apartments, have deprived New York's sidewalks of the fresh waste that gave them their essential character. They have flushed our city's charm away.

This is it boys, the platonic "New York can never get better" piece www.archpaper.com/2026/07/litt...

The parking is an issue that will be hotly contested, but the real problem is the aesthetics. These dumpsters —it is important to use this word, because that is what they will be in practice—will drastically alter the visual streetscape of the city.
The main problem is that these dumpsters will be on the street 24/7.
Currently, trash bags are typically on the street two mornings each week, with only a handful of weekend routes. Yes, these bags smell and attract rats, but there is no guarantee that the dumpsters will fully alleviate either problem. Instead, they will introduce worse problems.
The bins will contribute to the sense of New York becoming more
"sanitized" each day, where it is gentrified and perhaps physically cleaner but losing its character and history.
The West Harlem pilot was launched with 1,100 dumpsters in an area with no historic district designation, a set of protocols designed to protect the visual character of the streetscape. While they reduced reports of rats, they are limited as a case study. Once enacted, the Empire Bins will destroy the character of neighborhoods. We will have fewer cars and more dumpsters.

The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.

I appreciate people reckoning with this, but the real truth is it is still happening. Long covid affects tens of millions of people in the US, people are still getting it, people are still dying from covid every week, and our determination to insist it is in the Recent Past Is part of the problem.
