Brilliant letter from Stuart Thompson to Jeremy Clarkson about his comments that benefit claimants should write weekly thank you letters to tax payers detailing how they spend their benefits each week.
"I support cyclists and their right to ride safely on the road but only if they follow the rules all of the time" is an absolutely unhinged thing to say in a country where we have drivers killing tens of thousands of people each year and speeding while playing on your phone is normal and accepted
"War on Cars": Drivers kill pedestrians and cyclists in the street. Vs. There isn't always an empty parking spot just for you in front of every building in a metro area of 20M people.
Stop the War on Cars. Stop taking our parking spots away.
Yeah this has actually been known for a long time but the suffering of women is just accepted.
Hormone replacement therapy has long been surrounded by fear and uncertainty, after studies in the 1990s raised alarms about breast cancer risk. Newer research is prompting a closer look at the weak evidence behind those concerns and it’s prompting new treatment guidelines.
Doorzone bikelanes are for the protection of drivers from drivers, not the protection of cyclists from drivers.
The effort expended to add and shuffle around pylons exceeds the effort to just fix the potholes. Been eroding since the fall of last year. This is @natefor8.bsky.social #yycbike
Close up photos of bike racks along 8th Avenue in downtown Calgary, Alberta.
six lanes of pristine asphalt for cars. one lane of shitty asphalt for bikes. these bumps have been here for years
#yyc this is something we need to start thinking about.
Probably the most difficult thing YIMBYs face -- really, anyone who lives in a city -- is that government-subsidized street parking is one of the single largest barriers to affordability, safe streets, and climate action. That's because drivers view it as an entitlement, like social security. 🧵
It's been 15 years since Calgary voted to pass the Comprehensive Cycling Strategy. Many of the action items never came to fruition, and now here we are, maybe looking at bike lane removals. #yycbike
Mark your calendars! The next and final #twowheelview rummage sale of the year is on Sept 12! 10am-4pm. #yycbike. 9 speeds for all! #nice #ninespeed #ha
“If Albertans vote in favour of these questions, the province’s temporary foreign workers and non-permanent residents could lose access to health care, education and other funded services.” Anti-immigrant intent aside, this is shooting the province in the foot. Why would TFWs want to come here?
The upcoming Alberta referendum will include questions about immigration that critics say are misleading and clearly designed to scapegoat newcomers and refugees. If they pass, this will mark a massive victory for separatists. My latest for @forwardcanada.bsky.social
There is an option in here for Calgary too #yycbike
The Province asked Albertans to complain about bike lanes. We’re asking a better question: How does freedom of mobility improve your life? Tell us what safe, affordable ways to walk, roll, bike and take transit make possible for you. Share your story: tally.so/r/Y5vvN0 #yegbike

Stolen Trailer Alert! Please keep an eye out for this 8 foot long Bikes at Work trailer that was stolen yesterday afternoon from in front of Earth's Refillery Co-op. It has "property of EBC" written and engraved on it. #yegbike
There should be a bounty program where, if you take a picture of a car parked in a bike lane and send it to the city on some app, you get 10% of the fine or something like that.

Hung out in a bike lane at the end of a truck's delivery ramp for a few minutes today. Driver: hey sir can you move? I'm just gonna be a few minutes. Me: hey you should move I'm just gonna be here for a few minutes.
Tired, angry, tired, angry. Another early death because of an impatient driver refusing to check their mirrors, another early death because the country refuses to fix what is broken. Another murderer let walk because "it was just an accident, we pwomise it won't happen again again"
This sounds like a job for @helenipike.bsky.social and one of her YouTube specials for #yycbike. Happy to guinea pig 😂
An underappreciated fact. Cycling really is about as fast as driving for a whole lot of trips within cities.
Yeah, we just want to get where we want to go, alive! 🚲
Mr. Carney, the people of Canada yearn for freedom from the yoke of American vehicle safety regulations, we need the salvation of European safety regulations so we can have non-crazy-size vehicles from non-crazy countries
New from Building Beautifully "The cost of building transit in the Anglosphere has spiralled out of control. [...] Meanwhile, nations like France, Spain, South Korea and Turkey [...] building world-class transit at unprecedented speeds for prices up to four times cheaper" #publictransit
The English-world is TERRIBLE at building transit. This is why.

Interesting video from #Halifax comparing different modes of transport. I have heard of this for a few cities, has this been done in #Calgary? If not, what would be the few typical commutes to test & what would folks recommend the routes be for walking, biking & transit? youtu.be/7f2otUlufNY?...

"As a city we are going from a layout with less people per square kilomtere to more people per square kilomete. In order to fit all these people in and move them around, we're going to need solutions that move them around in ways that are smaller than a car." #yycbike youtu.be/InmNriQxv8M?...

No doubt UCP would love to drive pop. out of cities & to the exurbs where they can map the electoral ridings in their favor. The exurbs vote overwhelmingly for UCP yet depend on cities water, sewer transit & jobs. Exurbanites rather believe bike lanes ruin their lives rather than their own choices.
The Alberta government loves to overtly undermine the success of its own cities. This Orwellian “snitch line” about evidence-based protected bike-lanes to push out negative framing while inducing complaints is next level. They would rather more people die, traffic get worse, and cities get weaker.
