unfortunately pervasive idea that "managers" are some mutually exclusive category and always synonymous with executives. i've been a 'manager' at a pizza place, while washing dishes and making deliveries; i've managed staff at an architecture firm, while designing hvac systems and making drawings.

pithy sounding but false in the relevant sense. *all* great software we use, > a certain size, needs management. torvalds has barely written kernel code in 20 years. he manages. the kernel improved. margaret hamilton was director of sftware eng for the disaster-avoiding apollo guidance code. etc

i just don't really get how this many cis people car about gender more than trans people when trans people have to think about it constantly and cis people could just choose not to be obsessed instead of thinking about it even more constantly. feels self-inflicted and mostly comes off as pathetic

i LOVED Star Wars. this was when the extended universe stuff was just kicking in. He put me down with Bantam Press etc as the shop rep. For YEARS after they sent me promo book covers, details of upcoming releases, posters, the odd freebie. Dude was a legend. hope he found happiness elsewhere /end

They should make a new cut of Super Size Me where every time Morgan's symptoms are due to the alcoholism he was hiding, it plays the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme

Still from the movie. [Doctor] If somebody were doing this to their liver with alcohol, they could wipe out their whole liver. I've never heard of anyone doing that with a high-fat diet, but I guess anything's possible.

so if you’ve ever wondered “what should i get that annoying guy for his birthday” or “how can i contribute to somebody being vaguely nearer to police actions than i am”, i wouldn’t sneer at pocket change for Bike 2

You're in a bubble of the literate, the people who are able to process written language, and a dozen of the biggest sweatiest sex pest freaks the world has ever seen are using their vast resources and power to stomp this bubble into the ground.

[big shot posters competing on hubris to see who can offend the gods more] “none has reply creatures more wholesome than mine!” “nay! mine reply creatures gift me treasures and answers to the riddles of eternity” “…i only received a dozen pictures of the dick yesterday.” “woag” “woag”

from the excellent conclusion. I 100% agree that a major collapse is very unlikely and the real story here is that big tech is unilaterally doing industrial policy on the scale of the federal govt. it is completely nuts. and the real problems are already here, we don’t need to invent financial ones

I think there is much more profound insight in reflecting on the power of these four large corporations, largely controlled by billionaire founders/co-founders, to change how our physical resources are organized. They have the ability to produce monuments to the visions they see behind their eyelids without meaningful consequence. The ability of four companies to simply make the decision to make investment expenditures totaling 2% of U.S. GDP is astounding. Maybe some private credit funds will take a hit at the end of all this. Maybe pension funds, insurance companies, and some other institutional investors will take losses. But the quantities involved are simply not large enough to connect those losses to any financial crisis even remotely on the scale of the Great Financial Crisis. I’m not even sure it could reach even a portion of the financial damage of the Savings & Loan Crisis.

I need to reread that, since I only belatedly realized how many critiques of “modern autonomy” are better framed as critiques of liberty as *independence*. Autonomy is Good Actually™️, but you don’t have to be independent to exercise it! Indeed, usually you can’t.

Alasdair MacIntyre in Rational Dependent Animals pointed out that we arrive in this world utterly dependent on others for years, many of us leave it the same way, and in between any independence we achieve is pretty thin. Easily forgotten.

Kay Granger, a trailblazing Texas Republican who served as the first female mayor of Fort Worth and went on to spend 14 terms in Congress, becoming the first woman from her party to chair the powerful House Appropriations Committee, has died at 83.

CAFE REYNARD IS CLOSED TODAY We are deeply sorry to do this twice in one month, but a member of our team had a seizure and we have to close down the store today. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we prioritize people over profits.

The tech industry needs to have its impunity taken away. it behaves the way it does, including its mystification of LLM-AIs, because it doesn’t have trial lawyers looking at it like a hungry Oguri Cap

Flock tells cops not to argue with people who call their product "mass surveillance" because "you're not going to convince them." "You care about your community. That’s why you’re bringing this in."

“One of the most common questions agencies hear today is whether license plate recognition (LPR) technology constitutes mass surveillance. Many leaders instinctively respond by attempting to refute the claim. Flock's Jamie Hudson recommends a different approach,” the guide reads.

“Don’t avoid the concept of mass surveillance because you’re not going to convince opponents that it’s not,” the company recommends. Flock tells law enforcement agencies they need to try to convince city council and city managers that the technology is worthwhile before meetings with the public occur; that they need to have a “carefully scripted presentation” ready to go; and that police need to say they want Flock because they want to keep the community safe: “You care about your community. That’s why you’re bringing this in.”

Exclusive: We obtained a leaked playbook that Flock gives to cops to coach them on "how to speak to city council" to avoid getting their contracts canceled. Includes strategies like "own the narrative" by talking to mayor "before public comment periods" www.404media.co/own-the-narr...

one of the hardest parts of the current moment of everyone throwing trans people under the bus is not internalizing it? like, I think of myself as a pretty confident, accomplished person but I'm noticing myself having a lot more unhealthy internalized feelings of inferiority, etc lately
