Thoughtful piece abt #AI measuring farm animal pain. "...researchers argue that artificial intelligence-based pain detection systems could reduce animal welfare to only what algorithms can measure, which risks overlooking less easily detected conditions in industrial animal agriculture."

A new wave of AI tools promises to change the way farm animal pain is detected, using cameras, microphones and machine learning to spot suffering before a human could. @epayne.bsky.social reports: buff.ly/zddjDoV

At 1pm PT on Mon, Aug 3, I'll have a live update on the historic wildfire disaster that unfolded over the weekend in Spokane, Washington, including causes and context, then discuss the very active wildfire conditions currently present elsewhere in West.

Americans are making the connection between climate change and this summer’s droughts, floods, extreme heat, wildfires, and toxic smoke. Majorities of likely voters say extreme weather events are being “worsened by climate change” and 61% say that extreme weather is increasing.

Important topic that doesn't get the attention it deserves. What exactly is causing these massive wildfires and floods? Scientists say burning fossil fuels is the number-one contributor to climate change. That should be in every news story about these disasters.

I spoke with @cnbc.com, Indias largest business channel how the #fossilfuel industry laid the tinder for the horrific #EuropeanWildfires.

As long expected. It’s climate science 101. The vapor thirst of the atmosphere increases exponentially with temperature. A law of physics known since the early 19th C (Clausius–Clapeyron law). It causes more drought even if rainfall doesn’t decline. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Analysis shows how heatwaves are making atmosphere thirstier, damaging water supplies, food production and power generation

You guys aren't going to believe this, but ... it turns out the oil & gas industry knew that they were poisoning people (in this case, with methane) for years, and they hid it & did nothing to mitigate the harm. No, really, it's true! Incredible investigative work here from @rebleber.bsky.social:

Oil Firms Knew for Decades of Methane’s Danger to Planet, Documents Suggest

The companies knew they were releasing more of the greenhouse gas than they publicly reported, according to industry files cited by the Center for Climate Integrity, an activist organization.
