"we're the only ones who can be trusted with this tech" is definitely in Olympian hubris punishment territory.
lol Claude has also broken out of sandboxes and hacked people and ant literally didn't even know until they went looking in response to OpenAI's report Sounds like their oversight has scaled incredibly lol
For years, Telegraph columnists told us climate breakdown is a hoax. Now they say: it's real, but it's too late to do anything about it, so let the bodies pile high (again). Just one long list of excuses not to reduce fossil fuel use. Such newspapers bear as much responsibility as the oil firms.
Techno will bring you to the mountain, but to climb it you need House
Hello @eurosky.social, I seem to be affected by this: eurosky.tech/help/missing... -- though it may have taken me about a week to be affected from Bluesky's perspective? Maybe they had my avatar & banner pic cached for that long.

Why The Ocean Cleanup Hasn’t Solved the Plastic Pollution Crisis • The Revelator
Global problems are rarely solved by one person or invention. The Ocean Cleanup didn’t work, for the reasons experts said it wouldn’t. What can we learn from this?

I’ve also recently learned to not immediately jump to defensiveness when providing support. Turns out I was being an asshole there too. Sometimes the best thing you can do is check your ego at the door and just listen to what others have to say. It makes you a better partner and friend.

Just a big Norwegian website returning to the pandemic-era "argument" that as the people who died in the heatwave would have died anyway, they weren't really killed by the heatwave. Uses the word "harvesting" to describe their deaths for good measure.
Det er faktisk en skandale at dette blir fremhevet av en av våre største nettmedier. Det er ikke HR-kompetanse, det er empatiløshet på veldig høyt plan.
It’s as old as the world. A woman asking for help - any help - is weak, incompetent, not a problem-solver etc.; a man asking for help knows how to delegate and is a leader
Women’s use of AI is perceived as a sign of incompetence, while men’s use of AI is seen as an indication of initiative. 🤦🏻♂️

A Third Party Breached The Intercept’s Signal Tip Line and Has Been Soliciting Whistleblowers
The news outlet changed its tip line this week, but has not informed potential sources or the public of the breach.

there appears to have been a pretty wild breach of @theintercept.com's tipline on signal if it's true that they've known about it and covered it up, that's a horrendous breach of trust, idk how you fix that
I miss the days when the bad guys would monologue interminably about their plans before destroying the world. Gave us all a bit of a chance.
The UK still lacks legislation that specifically sets clear rules and limits on police use of facial recognition. Regulators have been calling for new legislation for over 10 years. Yet police are rapidly deploying this powerful surveillance tool without clear safeguards & independent oversight.

I actually think this bears repeating: Our Director of National Intelligence was just shown to *literally be taking secretive orders about what precisely to do and say in politics* from a scary cult leader in Hawaii And it wasn’t even front-page news How am I supposed to react to this?
This is one of the most strange, fascinating, and unsettling stories — and one of the best pieces of reporting — I’ve read about American politics in my life. Tulsi Gabbard took orders for her stances and bills in Congress (+ since?) from a secretive Hawaiian cult leader who wants to rule the world
