there's a story I think about a lot in Steven Levy's _Hackers_ where the early MIT AI lab hackers are baffled to find their building picketed by anti-war protesters because they basically considered themselves allies and were surprised this opinion wasn't shared
as a computer dork, I find myself with a great deal of ambivalence about the plausible reorganization back into the older pattern where people in the "make computer do shit" field are presumptively (and probably correctly, idk) considered tools of MIC authoritarianism on the left
this is really interesting because it's both easier than ever to "experience" war (Telegram drone footage snuff films) but more difficult than ever to perceive the costs of war (economic malaise, diplomatic sclerosis, security state brutality)
I don’t think Americans know what it’s like to lose lose a war. Yes sure the US lost in Vietnam but obviously the costs were way bigger for uh the Vietnamese

sometimes on my laptop I get the intuition that there's a beautiful interesting website I should be visiting but I either can't think of it or it is my mission to find it
the funny thing about people in the western world being angry at sikhs for taking all the trucking jobs is that people in India are also angry with them for taking all the trucking jobs. It's not you. It's what we do. We are the Truck Guys.
There’s a guy on TikTok who posts just him taking a pizza out of the oven every day with tongs and all of the comments are about how their day is ruined from having watched this
i really have no patience whatsoever for people who are scared of muslims having elected office
i saw someone essentially asking 'why are people more willing to donate to ngos and charities than directly to vulnerable people's gofundmes' and i have to be real here i suspect the answer is 'because they don't know you'
30 ROCK is an unlimited source of perfect jokes, but perhaps because the show reached peak popularity while I was in grad school, I've always been partial to this one
For the past five months the only refugees the USA has accepted are white South Africans fleeing equality & safety meanwhile they are disappearing or strapping ankle monitors on any Haitian they can get ahold of. It needs to be understood how thoroughly connected these two things are.
You could tell the rep I caught at the service desk minutes before closing was trained to immediately say “your flight is ineligible for a hotel voucher due to weather.” “Yes, the flight I was reassigned from was delayed due to maintenance.” The printer buzzed out my voucher and I made my way.
“We have arrived in Philly, and there’s no one here to park us. They knew we were coming, and no one is around. We’re going to call them again. Sorry for the delay once more.” I feel you captain, I feel you.
You know you can just buy the guts of an arcade stick, and turn anything into an arcade stick. I don't even drink.

I am often relieved that I'm old and coupled enough not to have to use a dating app and think of ways to convey the message "I can keep my ass clean" without having to actually say it and ruin the vibe
It’s amazing that there’s any confusion whatsoever about why so many straight women have zero interest in dating straight men nowadays
"it looks like you're using an adblocker to visit our site." yep! ha ha! it rocks!
EA officially goes private tonight, meaning: - EA will no longer trade on the NASDAQ for the first time in 36 years - All stockholders of EA (including many employees) will receive $210/share - EA will take on $18 billion (!) in debt, putting it on the hook to pay ~$1.8 billion/year in interest
suspiciously green bananas is sadly one of the funniest things i’ve read in awhile
