A saying: any lawyer who represents themself in court has a fool for a client. Likewise, a writer shouldn't edit themselves. There's a lack of distance and objectivity, two crucial ingredients for editing.

Anyone who knows the Buffalo area, what are some interesting things to do during the day (that are not Niagara falls)? We are kid-less and heading up this fall at some point.

I don’t really want a Charlotte real housewives show because it will just be another opportunity for transplants who chose to move here to complain about how it’s boring here which is entirely a skill issue

zoinks. There are hundreds of gravel routes basically right outside my (new) front door in Vermont. Heading up this weekend to do a walkthrough with the previous owner, and I know which bike I'm bringing.

I need shirt recommendations! I often wear trousers with a fairly close-fitting cotton long-sleeve shirt with a little stretch tucked into them. I need good-quality, not cropped, not tissue thin, solid-colored shirts. Brand advice? Not super concerned about price point bc I’ll find second hand. 🙏

When I was still lawyering @kathryntewson.bsky.social used to use me as her Rich Idiot Whisperer; having moved among them for most of my career I know how they think. This is a correct take. These people don’t do things to fail, they do them to succeed. The audiences are wrong, not him. Never him.

a lot of people think that faillison hired bari weiss to deliberately destroy CBS news and i think all of you need to consider the possibility that he hired her because he genuinely thought she would be successful.

Every time I see a story about Joe Scarborough criticizing Trump I like to remind folks that he was one of the first to rush to Mar a Lago after Trump won in 24 to kiss Trump’s ass

I like how much of the “low information” working or middle class voter discussion implicitly goes hard at the idea that they’re poorer and more susceptible to bad, dumb (mis)info, and I’m not saying people aren’t, but have u seen how rich highly educated people vote?

yes. i would wager that these people genuinely believe that the country is MAGA and that there is a vast and untapped audience to be appealed to. incidentally, these people also exist in an impenetrable bubble of sycophants.

A decade ago, if you aimed to predict Supreme Court decisions, which has proven a better heuristic? 1) Follow legal text and precedent according to a logically consistent judicial philosophy 2) Ignore or distort law to maximize GOP/right-wing power while mitigating risks of future court expansion

The early 1990s were not like today if you were a woman with a college degree. Not close. So much change happened between I'd say 1990 and 2000. For people who didn't want that change to happen, Hillary Clinton was public enemy #1.

As for the much-ballyhooed Contract with America: it was announced a few weeks before the election. Around this time in the cycle, I think. It was an effective marketing tool, and Democrats could probably do something similar.

I'm betting they also read LLM-"summaries" of, or LLM-"arguments" against, my work. What these "summaries" & "arguments" nicely illustrate is that a) LLMs cannot tell apart the structure of different arguments if similar words are used, b) create distorted slop that looks impressive to non-experts.

I've learned some unpleasant things on Bsky today, so let's do a palate cleanser: Red river hog momma with babies, from a 2025 viral video. Bunny-warthog plus furry watermelons. Red river hogs (Potamochoerus porcus) are native to W African rainforest & swamps.
