High school English & social studies teacher. Grad student. History, literature, sociology. Mom. Liberal. Regular desert woman in Michigan. Every account of mine inevitably becomes a political account, so assume that's where this train is headed as well.

As a long time Hasan Piker hater it is amusing and telling to me how no one is actually defending the things he said and did but instead is demanding everyone else stop talking about him at all

fwiw this is Hasan Piker on that same seven hour stream about five minutes before the other thing, and it would be super helpful if people generally and Piker specifically could avoid describing all Jewish summer camps and day schools as propaganda centers for a monstrous war

there just wouldn't be this much money spent to ensure that every young American Jew who goes to Jewish camp or Jewish school was getting unlimited amounts of Zionist propaganda and Zionist indoctrination.

The post-WWII global order was deeply flawed but was also represented the greatest and most widespread period of human flourishing in all of history so probably a bummer Republicans destroyed it in a fit of oppositional defiance disorder

America genuinely does badly need a ton more judges at basically every level, & I think one way to both fix SCOTUS and solve that very real issues is to rhetorically link SCOTUS expansion to a massive expansion of the courts generally + some kind of funding incentive to states to increase capacity

Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school; she built hospitals & bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.

“In Dallas for the premier of '9 to 5', I had an uncanny experience, and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened and said, "Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her." We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”

I used to teach in U of C’s core and I’m proud of them for this decision. There’s a lot to say about coming through that grad program, not all of it good. But one thing I cannot fault is the training. This is not a sentimental lot& they don’t mess around about training the human brain-then or now.

University Of Chicago Bans AI, Other Technology, In More Courses

Following up on a similar policy enacted at its law school, the institution will prohibit the use of AI in core social science courses starting in the fall semester.

After fifteen years of studying the anti-vax movement, I came to the conclusion that upholding legal requirements for vaccines for school entry is the single most important thing we can do. You cannot use facts to convince someone who did not employ facts to make their decision. So use the law.

I get that it's important to remain informed, but I'm getting really tired of people running to bluesky to post screenshots of shitty, trolling posts by the current administration. Like, yeah, they're very bad people. We know. Why are you amplifying it?

This morning, I found out that the high school my children will one day attend just got rid of honors classes for freshmen in favor of a "cohort" system in which students are lumped together in the same sections of English, history, and biology. Wtf. Literally just offer advanced options?!?! Why???

Far too much of the American education system does a disservice to its brightest and most motivated students. Too many administrators and teachers look at these kids and say, “Yeah, but your ambition means I have to do more work, so maybe just chill a little?” It’s a national embarrassment.

I resigned from my former school district a couple weeks ago, and they’ve taken absolutely no administrative action to offboard me. There’s a non-zero chance that my former principal hasn’t read the emails from me and the district HR guy and doesn’t get that I really-for-real quit. Not great, team!

Good thread Langston Hughes, who I am going to say understood this much better than I do or most people on this site do, called it 90 years ago. The idea of America the egalitarian anti-ethnostate, never fully and faithfully executed, is so important that it can never be surrendered.
