Yeah. This. I don't have kids and I don't want any. I still want my taxes to go to schools, to universities, to libraries. I want that money to pay for free lunches and playgrounds and parental leave. I don't have kids, but I still vote like I'm deciding their future, because I am.
El-Sayed: "My commitment to Jewish safety is the same commitment that I have to the safety of my own daughters. Because if there is one question of political philosophy that ought to animate us all, it's what would we do if we treated all our kids like they were all of our kids?"
"Allies" really are just one "she said something that hurt my feelings online" away from shit like this:
trans woman get run out of town while the cis man who stoked and aimed the mob sees no consequences and continues his charmed life, ignoring the wreckage and real world consequences of his personality of self centered bullying while claiming victimhood himself.
As one who has spent loads of time in Galway - trust me, you do not want to be running in the rain away from zombies there. Those streets are wet, slick and TINY! Did I mention it's always raining? Although, perhaps the zombies would just start piling up in the river😱 Anyways, go buy Iseult's book!

Think it's time to trot this one out again ;) You do NOT need the plagiarism machine! There is so much help and support out there if you're a new writer (even beyond this amazing trilogy)! linktr.ee/specficforne...
Is this from that film about sex being banned except for one night a year?
Do people just not write dialogue anymore? This entire scene feels like did a first draft with a bunch of "[insert joke line here]".
if you're directing a feature film you gotta come up with a way for a scene to be that's not "the two actors stand facing one another and deliver their lines." like you have to do SOMETHING

Just got a report of a scam solicitation w/ contact info harvested from copyright registration lists. The work is unpublished & not mentioned anywhere else; registration included author's cell #, so solicitation was via SMS. Just a reminder that any contact info on a registration is public record.
Sweet bleeding Mithras, almost everything is SO MUCH BETTER than it was 40 years ago. Air travel I grant you (with the exception of SMOKING ON PLANES). But medical technology? The availability of so many foods? Air pollution? It's just so much better now.
Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.
I’m not sure what rock you have to live under to think people haven‘t been screaming about our First Nations not having clean water for ages now.
So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?
Getting real sick of slop midwives pleading for a 'respectful discussion' of AI as relates to the arts. Your use of AI to 'make art' is not respectful. It benefits from stolen art, destroys the planet, and does not make you an artist any more than someone driving 26.2 miles is a marathoner.
If you'd like something even more dangerous, our archive is so old that we don't use these fancy modern rolling stacks. Ours are attached to a motorised chain that runs the length of the room. This means sometimes they like to move by themselves just a little, enough to keep you on edge.
i don't like to police genre, but it's not dark academia unless somebody gets squished in one of these bad boys
Pretending you don't see a difference between AI that counts beans and AI that steals novels is a doltish, peevish stance. Cannot believe @horrorwritersassoc.bsky.social ran this apologia for the plagiarism machine.
There is a lengthy pro-AI screed in the latest HWA newsletter and it is . . . a mood.
It's like the government claiming that legislation passed 16 years ago means it's been illegal to let blue cars into car parks this whole time, and their only comment is, "We expect owners of blue cars to comply."
Like, I need one of these ghouls to explain to me what actually *happens* when a cis person is being confronted. How are they meant to demonstrate their "biological sex" to the satisfaction of the person yelling at them?
I'm sure I've talked about this before. The whole point is to enforce compliance through social pressure. Trans people are simply going to avoid existing in public, and that's what the GC's actually want. But why would a cis person comply in advance with guidance that has nothing to do with them?
Even though I imagine that close to 100% of interactions stemming from this guidance will go that way. There will, undoubtedly, be some trans people who just want to avoid a scene, but most of the people confronted are going to be cis, and no one knows what happens then.
There a million things wrong with the EHRC guidance, as you all know, but for me the weirdest thing about it all is that its authors don't even seem to be aware of the possibility that someone asked to leave a "single sex" facility might refuse.

diabetes was a death sentence 40 years ago, now its a thing you manage with a pill or a pump and get on with living a solid 7+ decade life

I am not that old. In the early years of my career before i comprehensively put my foot down i would regularly find books in my work mailbox with notes from male colleagues instructing me to copy this chapter or that for them

I never noticed that, he said, not disbelieving me exactly, but that's what such an apparently impartial observation is doing. But you wouldn't notice it, would you, I said, when the system is working for you. #AcademicSky
A retired friend was remembering when there were departmental secretaries at universities who basically project managed the departments. You could give them handwritten documents, and they would type them up. He was shocked when I said it didn't work like that for female academics.
