Abolitionist in theory, incrementalist in practice. Here because I needed a place to keep track of the social unraveling and for silly nonsense (which I need because I paid attention to social unraveling). He/him
It is the 41st Millennium, humanity is led by the immortal god emperor Lula, forever encased in his Trono de Ouro. He leads us in eternal crusade against the Fell Legions of the Plague Lord Bolsonaro. In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war (and samba).
the year is 2046, a 100-year-old Lula scrapes out another victory against Bolsonaro Jr. Jr.
Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff
Everyone thought Lula was cooked, hopeless. Then he bought a phone and started posting and now he's gonna get a 4th term. The lesson is to never stop posting.
Of course a win for non-authoritarian leaders or movements does not automatically mean all problems are solved or that authoritarian forces can't come back in future. But it is worth maintaining hope and optimism, because if people succumb to nihilism and apathy then democracy cannot survive.
I do not regret to inform you that we are going to win
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva came from behind to win Brazil’s runoff election, halting a right-wing wave sweeping Latin America and defying predictions that the 80-year-old political veteran had finally reached the end of his extraordinary career. bloom.bg/4BsvV24 📷: Maira Erlich/Bloomberg
Literally 3 hours ago I was reading posts saying Bolsanaro was a 110% lock because look at all the voter suppression he had going for him, and how this was a preview of 2028 here in America. Real heads remember the dark times of 180 minutes ago.
Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.
Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.
Can’t wait for the toxicity of midterm infighting to be over so we can jump feet first into the toxicity of 2028 infighting
Congratulations to the world's new champions of liberty, the...*squints*...Magyars and...*squints again*...Serbs.
If Nicki Minaj becomes press secretary then we need to add Cardi B to the press pool so she can beat her ass again
Nihilism is a luxury a lot of people cannot afford. They are forced to make imperfect choices in order to survive. It’s normal to feel it from time to time, but I think we, especially those of us who are relatively insulated, have a responsibility to keep it to ourselves. To process it ourselves.
Neon Liberalism #96: Bret Devereaux explains why we're all still obsessed with World War 2, why Hearts of Iron IV is a gateway to (mis)understanding the war, and most importantly: what fascism was and why it failed. www.liberalcurrents.com/the-lies-of-...
The Lies of Hearts of Iron (Neon Liberalism #96, with Bret Devereaux)
Why are we all still obsessed with World War 2?

Folks just a warning/reminder: Active measures are in full force! The goal is to create division and deter people from voting for democrats. Many of these accounts have cartoon avatars and ~100 followers. There’s a weird “lesser of two evils led to Hitler” thing they’re pushing right now, too.
Chat, is it good when a Circuit Judge, from the bench, quotes the constitution at you?
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.
Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”
trump’s bush 2 speedrun is going so fast we’ve already reached mid-2008 and cons whining about obama liking arugula and dijon mustard
"The party left me. I used to be a Democrat, but know that Obama has made fun of Trump for making the White House look like a dictator designed an over-the-top chain restaurant I favor starving African children and bringing measles back"
no, sorry, we're not debating whether obama was actually problematic by referencing the cheesecake factory in order to mock the president. that's some woke 1 stuff and we're all better than that now. i'm going to shut this one down and i'm going to assume we're all in general agreement that i should
3 out of 300 polled for a Michigan statewide race would be a poll of 100,000 people.
Mike Johnson: "When I'm in these big arenas, I ask for hands -- 'Show me your hand if you've answered a poll in the last six months.' There will be like three hands among 300 people. I'm telling you, these polls are off. All of them."
Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.
Incredible gender difference in voting intention in Brazil.
I'm sorry but banning non-English speakers because machine translation is unclean is more fascist than anything in the AI space except maybe Palantir's XAI enterprise account
hooooo boy we don't like this no we don't > If you don't speak English, you need to find a different community. We cannot distinguish between AI-written and AI-translated. Since you don't speak English, you can't even verify yourself if it translated correctly. www.reddit.com/r/opensource...
