Support trans workers at the University of Washington Google form to express interest: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F... 2023 Equity Survey Report: 75% of transgender people surveyed reported experiencing harassment at University of Washington. uw-s3-cdn.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/u...

Support Trans Workers!

Postdocs and research staff at the University of Washington are bargaining for a new contract this summer. To address the worsening conditions for transgender people across the country, we proposed a memorandum of understanding to:

Improve data privacy for anyone (regardless of identity) changing their name, and to wave their ID card replacement fee
Provide sensitivity training for supervisors of trans workers, to prevent harassment. The equity survey jointly administered by UW and UAW 4121 shows that transgender people at UW are harassed 3x more than cisgender people [1].
Secure a fund to support costs of gender transition.

Admin has rejected our proposal twice now, each time citing concerns we’ve already addressed. When pressed to explain his reservations, admin’s lead negotiator said: “I am not speaking in terms of facts.” “I haven’t been advised or done any research.” How are we supposed to work with that?

University of Washington admin pride themselves on being part of a trans friendly institution. At the ceremonial pride flag raising, they honored the recently murdered trans girl and UW student Juniper Blessing with a new scholarship [2]. But when asked to simply waive the costs of replacing an ID card for anyone, cis or trans, who changes their name, they moan that we’re asking for “special treatment” and fear-monger about the federal government. How do admin really feel about the queer community? Seattle is a sanctuary city for many trans people fleeing violence from across the country. What precedent does it set if the largest employer in the city refuses to bargain over basic protections? Admin’s response to the transition support MOU we proposed must be seen alongside their other bargaining positions. So far, admin have proposed to:

Slash anti-discrimination protections (for example, by removing “medical condition” from the list of protected categories), citing fear of the federal administration.
Set Postdoc and Research Staff wages to barely increase, representing an effective $7500 wage cut (accounting for inflation) over 3 years. Admin agreed their own offer “fucking sucks”, and its less than half what they gave to non-union staff.
Effectively take away our right to information about their bargaining proposals, so they never have to prove a thing they assert at the bargaining table.

It’s clear that admin will not give us a fair deal until we show them we won’t take anything less. We’re calling on our community allies – students, faculty and staff, fellow unions, community organizations – to pressure UW admin to start getting serious about our contract, and to support trans workers!

If you’d like to help out, you can sign up here and we’ll reach out to you. We also encourage you to share your opinions directly to UW admin by emailing the vice president of Human Resources Heather Horn at hhorn1@uw.edu.

thinking about all of the “Daddy’s home” stuff for Trump 47, for a lot of the core Republican electorate, beating your wife and threatening her life, being a terror to your own children, is a feature not a bug they like the promise of getting to be the tyrant of your home with servants and subjects

To the extent that the media is treating this as a horse story: Max Miller is not a some random candidate from Ohio. This is a picture of President Trump speaking at the wedding of Max Miller and Emily Moreno.

I cannot emphasize how much of a non-issue this is. I use the women's. Doctors ask when my last period was. Airport security looks back up at me when I hand them my passport. I have navigated life smoothly as a woman for years, and I am only endangered by the ideological fixations on denying that.

Anyway i will just continue using the women’s toilet cause I am a woman and over my dead body will you deny who i am

honestly can't stress enough, as a former family law attorney, how depressingly common Max Miller's behavior and words are, right down to the petty fixation on custody procedure and rules when faced with allegations of shocking violence.

Rep. Max Miller: "When I was reported for child abuse of my daughter for a broken collarbone, my daughter was in my ex-wife's care 9 out of the last 11 days and she took her to the emergency room, which is a contempt violation from our shared parenting plan."

Anyways, if you're wondering why I'm looking at SPS middle school boundaries and housing, it's because of this: the three middle school zones experiencing growth of any sort for SPS K-8 grades (versus extremely slow decline) are Aki Kurose, Mercer, and Washington middle school attendance areas.

Not more complex than: he was one of the special people who have Freedom Plus to do and say whatever they want without any limitations set by the public, who need to be watched like hawks and harshly punished, the second they step out of line or get any ideas about how things should be organised.

Reactions to Rod Liddle's death have been revealing. To a whole section of the British media not exclusively on the right repeated sexism, racism, Islamophobia, homophobia & more are all fine. The reasoning: 'he is a nice guy; 'he had me on his show' & did bigotry with a smile.

notice how he characterizes her actions as contempt but doesnt say she was held in contempt, meaning he either didn't file, or he filed and got shot down. One doesn't generally file even if one could over emergency medical care except maybe failure to notify of a hospitalization or serious injury...

Smoke has arrived in Seattle, but the other side of the Cascades is absolutely brutal. Wenatchee and other towns (e.g., Plain, Entiat) have been over 1,000 AQI today. Please use air purifiers, N95 masks, and avoid being outdoors if you’re able - there is no safe level of wildfire smoke exposure.

I like the concept of sufficiency being added here because it does open the door for a discussion of CripTax. CripTax is, basically, when it costs a Disabled person more to live at the same or equitable level of comfort as a non-Disabled person.
