The key is understanding that they don't actually mean "won't work". They mean "won't use their time and effort to enrich an unofficial aristocracy". "Have three degrees and know six languages" is their nightmare; the Right is terrified of an "educated proletariat" (actual quote, from 1970).

been thinkin about conversations i've had that are anti-UBI and the central argument seems to be "people won't work" bitch if i had ubi and didn't have to be scared of losing my livelihood i'd have like 3 degrees and have leared at least six languages by now in addition to music and art production

If I had UBI, I'd have taken a reasonable amount of time off work and school to grieve my parents, and probably still be in classes now.
