I strongly believe that one question we should be directing at more politicians is "What the fuck is the matter with you"
I remember arguing with someone - now an MP - about soup kitchens: I saw them as a response to need, whereas they saw them as enabling homelessness. Enabling homelessness. As though homeless people made themselves so as a lark.
I remember someone comparing it to the gym. It's more efficient to move large amounts of weight with a forklift truck than a human being, but the point of going to the gym isn't that the weight is moved, it's that YOU learn to move the weight.
The point isn't to produce essays, it's to teach students how to think for fuck's sake. The minute you automate that, it's over. You might as well close the course. Which they're also doing. This is an attack on learning, and everyone is just shrugging.
Fabulous crossover of all my interests 🐟🥣🔍
The Romans were among the first societies to extensively exploit fish resources, salting and fermenting them in large-scale plants. Ancient DNA sheds light on the environmental impact still felt to this day. 🏺 A #FestivalOfArchaeology thread on #NatureAndArchaeology 1/12 🧵
oh so a while back I used to run these fun interviews with MPs for Parliament's in-house magazine - did one with John Healey, which I really enjoyed at the time, and you may like also: www.politicshome.com/thehouse/art...
The only cabinet minister for AI I will accept is a grizzled, cigar-chewing veteran from the post-apocalyptic future who says things like 'There's only one way to end this: my way' and also she has an endless supply of pipe bombs.
Minister for AI to sit in Cabinet 👀 www.thetimes.com/article/c10e...
we can take these actions as models and deploy them. continue to work on building consensus towards that.
Korea added ANOTHER 7 years to President Yoon's sentence this week. He's already in for life but there's constantly new trials to set precedent for every single thing he did wrong to be worthy of punishment. Elsewhere, political standards are so lax no one can even check if a dude's dead or not.

This is so outrageous. The Government wants to reclassify Coastguard Rescue Officers as "volunteers" so they can get out of paying them an hourly wage when they go out to save lives. Join me and sign the petition to demand the Government scrap plans to strip rescue heroes of their pay: 38d.gs/sh54

A Brit in the semis of Wimbledon, England still in the World Cup and Nigel Farage spending the summer arguing with a bin. Oh this happy breed of men, this little world, This precious stone set in the silver sea
This quote from Rachael Reeves is👌 "I will accept Nigel Farage’s request to be appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead. It is a farce and a desperate distraction, and the people of Clacton deserve better. But if he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won’t stop him"
They know when the print job is important and will f#ck you up
I am tech support to the bone and do not like to mystify computer stuff but I genuinely believe in my heart of hearts that printers have demons in them. There is literally no other explanation.
The conclusion the French built some of the world's most beautiful ships is a post Hoche fallacy
hi hello modern slavery expert here 👋👋 requiring asylum and refugee seekers to pay back support is precisely how traffickers keep victims in debt bondage. this exposes people to even greater re-trafficking risks. is the uk government trying to stop trafficking or learn from criminals?
Spent years building up a big following on Twitter, essential for publicising my aviation blog, which I live from. Desperate to leave it & publicise on nicer platforms, but I have too few follows. If you want to help me escape, do give this a share. Much obliged. My blog here: hushkit.substack.com
There’s a simpler name for this: it’s called pulling up the ladder. “Yes, we got to go to university but that’s it now, none for you.”
This misses the point. Self-education has become more accessible in the last 20 years than at any point in history, though not through ‘amateur reading’. The problem isn’t access to information but learning how to evaluate it critically - and that brings us back to universities (and Humanities)
How do you stay cool in Hookland? You visit a parish church and become part of its congregation of shades. You climb into a portal tomb and lie you back against its cooling stone as you listen to the heatless whispers of the ancestral dead.
The UK should be tremendously proud of this. Instead, our oligarchic media and opposition parties use it as a stick with which to bash the government.

I was born and grew up in Brighton, this does not surprise me in the slightest. Proud❤️
We the anti-fascists outnumber the fascists by a mile. We are surrounding them. Brighton is anti fascist
Most people believe that Rishi Sunak is English. Most people who don't are racists. Is that contentious?
My biggest act of middle aged rebellion is removing the UTM link from the end of a URL when sharing it so that the brand won't know where that share originated from.
