Not to caricature, because many tech people are broadly curious and educated, but I do think some of the weirdness in AI discourse involves some people inventing philosophy basically from first principles and arguing with people who are more or less saying “We covered that sophomore year.”

Yes! It's not unlike standing up for someone being harassed in public. If one person stands up to the bully then other people are very likely to back them up. Creating permission structures for ethical actions works just as well as creating them for unethical actions. A lot of people are joiners
