Watching a friendquaintence slowly get radicalized by Facebook. They're still amenable to reason, ish, but the fact that they went from relatively apolitical and reasonable about stuff to parroting conspiracy crap in a few years is just so depressing.

Suresh reports on his experience talking with hundreds of executives (and, more importantly, their subordinates) about what (if anything) AI is doing for business in an essay entitled "AI Mania Is Eviscerating Global Decisionmaking": hermit-tech.com/blog/ai-mani... 11/

Sometimes I feel bad I'm not politicsposting constantly anymore, but I just have this sort of dull anxiety about everything constantly because there's so MUCH and don't want to talk about it. But I should, right? Because that's the point, to overwhelm action? (Not that posting is action, really)

I took two weeks off work and I keep having the most amazing Sunday when I think about work and then remember I don't have to do that tomorrow*. *Yes I'm aware it's a stat tomorrow but I manage a US team so I gotta match holidays. BUT NOT TOMORROW hahaha

In case you're counting, the planet is now on day 6 reaching a global surface temperature above 17.0°C. The only other years reaching 17.0°C since records began in 1940, and likely in the last 120,000 years, were 2023 and 2024. Next year will be much hotter.

Wile E. Coyote, despaired, takes a bucket of paint and a brush and paints a beautiful two-bedroom house on a mountainside. He paints a beautiful coyote wife in the window, and two adorable coyote kids running around in the yard. He tries to enter this new coyote life, but it is inaccessible to him

one thing that I hate about ADHD is that I need to be hyper interested, extremely stressed, etc. to really get into something. no gears beyond locked in or kinda listless. this isn't a quirk chungus so wacky thing, it's a character flaw that makes my life worse.

What’s a woman? We asked The Odyssey and you’ll never believe the answer…s! 1. Bird with a lady head 2. Shapeshifting witch 3. Baddie who came out of a bird egg 4. A whirlpool maybe 5. Tentacle monster who barks like a dog 6. More different shapeshifting witch 7. Weird horny island hermit

It cracks me up how mad people are about Eliot Page existing in a story that pretty famously contains Tiresias the Transition Enthusiast, an mpreg headburster, and a chick who hatched out of a swan’s egg. Yes hi I am Homer my gender is “lol” (Yes I said chick she’s a swan & so’s her sister. HONK.)

I'm a feminist gerontologist by training. Being in grad school in my 20s, studying elderly women was an immense privilege for many reasons, one of which being that I learned very early on that you either age or you die young. There's no third option. Aging is a privilege.

‘Anti-ageing is anti-life’: why longevity culture is just ageism in a lab coat

Rapid scientific progress has given us the tools to stop time more convincingly than ever – but lurking behind these claims is the same fear of ageing

Most engineering orgs - and I flatter them using that word - measure productivity by how much *stuff* teams ship. This is to fundamentally mis-characterise software development. It's not a delivery process. We're not Uber Eats. It's a *learning* process. And the biggest factor is feedback latency

The critical thing to understand about this air conditioning debate is that fossil fuel companies should be held accountable for destroying the planet.

Am I being over-sensitive here or does the term “side effects” have an inherent negative connotation and therefore this headline is sci-comm malpractice? The “side effects” are reduced risk of serious cardiac complications and reduced risk of all-cause cardiac events. Benefits. That’s the word.

You know you're a nerd when you're excited to get an ECG (nothing's wrong, just grabbing a baseline so that when I get heart disease--I hope not to, ofc! But given it's the #1 cause of death in Canada for the 156th year running that's where to bet--they can compare my future heart attack against it.
