One reason for exploding American transit costs is the lack of funding and state capacity for planning.

In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.
Thinking about how a roommate of mine back in the day was dating a French girl who came to work on the Waterloo ION signal system and how the commentariate like @ontariotrafficman.bsky.social and @seanyyz.bsky.social have noted how French the signal system is. Co-incidence? I think not.

But this week reaffirmed why that approach is so baked into the DNA and political culture of Vancouver.

I don't get why people need to frame non-profit housing in opposition to market housing. You can just say “we need more co-ops”. No need to include “not condos”. The gives license to people to block new housing, which makes our shortage worse and doesn’t actually help get any more co-ops built!
