With a ladder and some glasses, you could see to Hackney Marshes, if it wasn’t for the houses in between. In a very particular order: publisher, editor, bass player, dad.

Please stop arguing about the historical accuracy of an adaptation of a book that has a cyclops and a couple of witches and some giants. I’m begging you.

I’m going to read a poem a day out of Matthew Stewart’s collection Whatever You Do, Just Don’t. Mainly because as a parent with kids who are no longer little The Last Carry, spoke to me, and because I’ve been saying forever that I ought to read more poetry. Follow along or join me if you like.

As parents, we're supposed to remember the first time we did stuff with our kids, but the last time is equally as significant, if not more. This poem is from Whatever You Do, Just Don't (HappenStance Press, 2023), my second full collection...

In the Great Hall of the Doges Palace in Venice are portraits of the Doges. One is just painted black. That is the one who tried to stage a coup and wreck the Venetian System. I think about that a lot when thinking about how history will view Trump.

My kingdom for a UK leader who will say "immigrants are a key part of our communities, they are our neighbours, friends, colleagues, partners. We will not tolerate racist and fascist violence against them" and who is willing to walk the walk of defending us. Without "legitimate concerns"-ing it.

Why do writers change the base when comparing statistics. (And why do editors let them?) This: Fifty years ago, the disorder was said to affect 4 in 10,000 people, but today the worldwide average prevalence is 1 in 100. Is much clearer as:

Image of book text that reads:

Bookseller : Can I help? Person browsing : Oh, yes! I’m trying to find particular book. Bookseller : Okay. Do you have the author or title? Person : No … but it’s yellow …?

Bookshop window with a display of many varied books that are all yellow.

Me: Err, you haven’t sent my order from two months ago. Retailer: Oops, sorry. We’ll send that now. Me: Okaaaay Retailer: And to make amends we’ll give you some money off … Me: :-) Retailer: … your next order with us! Me: :-/

Language changes for better and worse. Better is when we get new words that help communicate new ideas or finer nuances. Worse is when nuance of meaning is lost. Eg when “epicentre” just comes to mean “centre”. People just throw around “epicentre” because it sounds cleverer than “centre”.

PING, PING, PING goes my phone. 😡 If the school sends an email with a letter why is there always someone who feels the need to post that same letter to both the year group WhatsApp group and the class WhatsApp group? We all got it on email already!

“So your new carol is just eight verses of you demanding figgy pudding with increasing hostility.” “That’s right.” “And it’s called We Wish You A Merry Christmas?” “Yes” “Buts it not really about Christmas is it? It’s mostly about figgy—“ “—figgy pudding yeah.”
