Yesterday, I took Mochi to the groomer and was able to hold the whole conversation with her in Dutch when leaving her and when picking her up. It helped that she was really patient and that she said "teddy bear" in English 🥹

What Bruges politicians are arguing about this week – we only have 50 swans currently, which puts us below the 52 needed to keep off a (likely fake) mediaeval obligation put on the city after Bruges citizens beheaded Maximilian's enforcer Pieter Lanchals in the market place.

It's time to welcome Chris Oliver (@excid3.com) as one of our amazing speakers! Chris is a Rails Luminary, founder of GoRails, and host of Remote Ruby podcast. We're very happy to have him on stage this year. Catch his talk at the conference.
I just released Insta, a new snapshot testing library for Ruby, live at RubyConf in Las Vegas! Extracted from Herb's test suite and inspired by @mitsuhiko.at's fantastic insta library for Rust. `gem "insta"`
😱😱😱🥹🥰 equal parts super excited, super grateful and super terrified!
Speaking at the SF Ruby Startup Conference: Rosa Gutiérrez (@rosa.codes)! You may know her from her work at 37signals or as the creator of Solid Queue. She loves puzzles, theoretical CS, and her pup: Mochi. Get early bird tickets for the conf and see her on stage: luma.com/sfrubyconf2026
Possibly going tomorrow to see this with folks from my Dutch school 🤩
How cool are Belgium's away kits? I'm obsessed: www.instagram.com/p/DWGG8Wuj21... They pay homage to Belgian icons. This year's is Magritte, but previous years have included Tintin, cycling, Tomorrowland...
I watched the 🇪🇸🇧🇪 match yesterday in the Dageraadplaats in Antwerp, which is one of the nicest squares I know. The city had installed a big screen and a fan zone there. I'm not really that much into football, but the atmosphere there was awesome 🤩⚽️🍻🍟🚲️🚲️🚲️ Happy that 🇪🇸 won, but I seriously love it here

I had so much fun speaking with the Once a Maintainer folks about being an open source maintainer and some of the security work that's involved. I hope you give it a read and enjoy! ❤️ onceamaintainer.substack.com/p/once-a-mai...

Another thing I'm fascinated about lately: Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau 🤣 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baarle-... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baarle-... "The border's complexity results from a number of medieval treaties, agreements, land-swaps and sales between the Lords of Breda and the Dukes of Brabant."
Want a beginner-friendly entry point into open source at RubyConf? RubyEvents with Marco Roth and Rachael Wright-Munn is indexing the full history of Ruby events, and they need help. Modern stack, good first issues ready, and a chance to dig into Herb and ReActionview in person. buff.ly/FMNCNhV
In Dutch zoet = sweet zout = salty/salted supermarket mistakes guaranteed ✔️ Also, who invented the aberration that are zoete olijven? I had never heard of them and @jorgeleria.bsky.social is traumatised now 🤣 He literally screamed when he tried them. Why isn't this forbidden by some law?
I've been a fan of Herb Lester Associates for a super long time, and have some of their London guides/maps. Their literary guides are a dream: www.herblester.com/collections/... I think I'm going to get Lamb's London, as I'm making my way through the Slough House books (huge fan).

One of the most important things I've learnt this weekend is that there's a regatta in October in Kasterlee (a town in the Anwerp province) where participants paddle in hollowed-out giant pumpkins. It's called the Pompoenregatta. And then people ask me why I like Belgium so much. I mean...
After a few months of almost non-stop travel, I'm in Belgium, more or less settled until January 2027 🇧🇪❤️ I still have a few trips planned this month and Sep/Oct, but not constantly on the go like before. And starting Dutch classes again tomorrow, A2-B1. I'm determined to be fluent 💪🏻😆
