ca.May 1924 Edinburgh Corporation's 'popular chara-a-banc tours' and tram services from the city's Official Guide. The tours were the origins of the Transport Dept's popular sightseeing tours. The tramways show the recent conversion from cable & the merger with the Leith system. @threadinburgh.scot

Edinburgh Corporation Tramways & Motors : advert : in : The Official Guide to Edinburgh : nd [ca.1924]. Two letterpress pages - tours on left, table of tramway services on right showing service numbers, routes and colours.
An interesting list of the "char-a-banc tours" and tramway services operated by Edinburgh Corporation Tramways and seen in an undated edition of the city's Official Guide. In terms of the 'chara' tours these were, of course, the early iterations of Transport Department's popular and profitable city coach tours, As can be seen various tours left St. Andrew Square daily taking in various parts of the recently expanded city including down to the seaside and river at Cramond.

In terms of the list of tramway services this was towards the end of a period when the city's tramways had undergone massive change. Not only had the neighbouring Leith's system been amalgamated upon annexation of that Burgh in 1920 but their electric car system had also finally seen off Edinburgh's increasingly antiquated cable operated tram services. These, one of the world's largest such systems, were converted in remarkable short order; the first conversion undertaken was 20 June 1922 and by 23 June 1923 the last cable was switched off. In addition through running, as seen here, of electric trams was now possible to Musselburgh and Port Seton.

In terms of dating; the 24 Waverley/St. Andrew St to Comely Bank is here and that, replacing bus service 4 that had covered for withdrawn cable trams, came into service on 18 November 1923. Route 23, that does not appear here, from Goldenacre to Tollcross was introduced on 8 June 1924. In addition the extension of service 1 to Liberton that occurred on 28 April 1924 does appear along with extensions to services 4 (Piershill), 5 (Churchhill) and 12 to Corstorphine that date to the same period are shown. All this roughly dates the advert to May 1924. The table also shows the coloured lights that were shown for each route at night.

Edinburgh by-elections due on the 3rd of September. In 2022, Labour beat Greens by 2% after transfers. Given what happened last month, Greens should surely be ahead. If they win, that'd be only their second by-election win ever. Curveball: Lib Dems have a formidable local machine.

Chart of first preferences in 2022. In percentage terms, Labour 24.1, Green 23.0, SNP 19.2, Conservative 17.6, Lib Dem 16.1Chart of transfers in the ward in 2022, re-calculated for a single winner. In percentage terms at final head to head stage, Labour 44.2, Green 42.2, Didn't Transfer 13.6Map of the ward with polling districts coloured by lead party in 2022. There is, and never has been, any practical justification for a Sheriffhall flyover. It's well established that added road capacity is ultimately self-defeating as it just creates demand. Miles Briggs needs to go on a transport planning course. www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/new-tra...

The fun thing about what Edgerton is saying here is: it isn’t even contentious. This is what they themselves said they were doing, and what their cheerleaders explained was absolutely excellent shit that the public would love.

It is a common complaint, from Wes Streeting to the left, that Starmer has no vision, no project. But that is quite misleading. Starmer had an exceptionally strong vision for the future of the country, and a profoundly blinkered one. Starmer's party abhors the left and wishes for a future without it. He is continuing the New Labour project: to create a new conservative and conformist party. That is, a party with minimal member influence, funded by private donors, committed to maintaining a status quo, and offering remunerative post-political careers for its apparatchiks. It is a party deeply committed to the alliance with the United States, and the one country with which the US has a special relationship, Israel."The question is not whether Labour values have been usurped by Starmer's faction. It is what kind of party could be built out of the corpse of Starmer's party. One option is clearly a more Blairite party: pro-tech giants, the US, and privatisation. But are there any serious options to create a progressive party, one that dares speak out on the issues of the day, that actually communicates with a progressive electorate? It is hard to see at the moment whether the ambition or capacity exists within it.
It is worth noting that Starmer's Party is only barely the official party of the organised working class. Whereas Labour had affiliated to it nearly every major trade union, today only just over half of union members are in party-affiliated unions. And even then some may leave. This is hardly surprising: as it stands its policies, Starmer's Party's political instincts, are far closer to those of the Tories and Reform than to the progressive parties that are eating it up. And that is not accidental, or the result of a lack of vision. It was the whole point."

Yes: these clowns were hired on the clear understanding that they would pursue cruel welfare cuts and now it’s clear they cannot do that, they are surplus to requirements. The search is now on for someone who will.

Where it all went wrong for Keir: it was the welfare U-turn, not the Mandelson misjudgement, that undid Starmer's premiership

Faiza Shaheen: "Theres a big gap between the [govt] rhetoric we're hearing & the reality.. we are allowing the US to load their planes with bombs on UK bases & they are bombing Iran. This defensive/offensive doesn't play out in reality, the govt think they can play the public.."

For folks in Edinburgh: Colleagues at Edinburgh Napier are still under threat of compulsory redundancy. There is a rally in front of the Scottish Parliament, Thursday 5 March 10:30am for 11:00am start. We're crushing a sector that supports our city and region. Why?

I did enjoy finding out that a former pupil of Jimmy Clark's was John Gollan (1911-72), general secretary of the Communist Party of Great Britain. ⚒️⭐🇬🇧 He got 6 months in 1931 for handing out socialist pamphlets (“The Soldier’s Voice” and “The Organ of Communist Soldiers“) at Redford Barracks 🧑‍⚖️

Jimmy’s: the thread about the school on St Leonard’s Crag St Leonard's Crag is the romantic sounding name for a quarried-out promontory where Holyrood Park meets the old district of St Leonard's. Perched atop it is a handsome old building whose striking feature is a grand corner tower on which…

This image from @ballotbox.scot neatly shows how the boundary of Edinburgh Central has changed to give the Scottish Greens a genuine chance of winning the seat. The Tory vote has since collapsed and they might not even keep their deposit. 🟢Both Votes Green in Edinburgh Central🟢

Image which shows the change in the boundary of Edinburgh Central between 2021 and 2026.

The Cabinet Secretary is still publicly misrepresenting the state of play in his substantially redrawn constituency. Not only is the Conservative horse not in the race due to that party's collapse in support, but the boundary changes euthanised the poor thing.

🟡The first Walk-in GP service has opened in Edinburgh, and 14 more are on the way across Scotland. 🐎It’s a 2-horse race between the SNP and Tories in Edinburgh Central. 🗳️Vote SNP and Angus Robertson for Edinburgh Central to boost GP services in Edinburgh.

Today the Edinburgh Green Councillors proposed radical changes to the Tourist Tax allocation. Sadly other parties were not open to protecting services, affordable transport or creating safer community environments. 🌳 🚌 🤝

I’m sorry to see Angus Robertson continuing to share deliberately misleading false claims 🤥 Greens are polling to win the Central constituency 💚 with tories absolutely nowhere to be found Maybe he’s seen the polling and is scared to tell the truth?

Screenshot of a skeet from Angus Robertson, the SNP MSP for Edinburgh Central and candidate for re-election, falsely claiming “it’s a 2-horse race between the SNP and Tories in Edinburgh Central” which is demonstrably untrue
