A Receipt to Make Black Ink Take 5 Ounces of the best galls of Alleppo. Bruise them and put them to 2 quarts of rainwater. Let them stand 48 (?) hours being shaked often then add to it 2 ounces of gumarabick and 2 ounces of green copperas and so in proportion for a greater or less quantity

Would anyone like to try making some iron gall ink? If so, this book on miniature painting has a recipe for you!

Can everyone see Gladys here? She hasn’t had support in 2 days & that needs to change immediately. She is living under militia attacks in Congo. As in, at this moment her life & her son’s life are in danger from violence. If you have seen her, now’s the time to actually give to her. Boost.

#MutualAid #HelpSky ⚠️ URGENT ⚠️ We've made no progress for 2 days now!! My son and I live in fear for our lives each day with the rising militia attacks and raids. Kindly help us evacuate to safety as soon as possible.🙏🏾🙏🏾🇨🇩 goget.fund/4db20A6

video games. I used to have to wait all day to get home, so that I could take in my turn on the NES. Now, I have my own portable video game system that is capable of playing photo realistic games for hours

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

I'll come at this a bit sideways. Yes, Dorothy Dandridge is FOINE in Carmen Jones. However: The extras in this scene look fantastic. I've spent so many moments over the years looking at all these people. Everyone's lit so well. GORGEOUS, rich, lively humanity 💜 youtu.be/_88YGrzRcmw

there is a recurring prompt around what’s the best that anyone has ever looked on camera and I never have an answer but I’m watching right now and I think it’s gotta be George Clooney in Ocean’s 11

There's something diminishing about living in a world where men's abuse is so ubiquitous and unimpeded, and still women are chided for not thinking enough of men's woes, men's harms, men's feelings. We're constantly asked why we don't tolerate our endless violation with more dignity.

Rebecca Solnit@rebeccasolnit.bsky.social · 16h ago

It's demoralizing living in a nonstop Abuse-a-thon: we've had to learn the sordid details of so many men's abhorrent behavior; I mean this summer has been Graham Platner, Andrew Tate, Jared Leto, Max Miller, plus the horrific L.A. rape-murder of the child by the rapper, to name a few lowlights.

This sends the message to men and boys — from classrooms to Congress — that abusing women is not disqualifying. That it won’t stop you from getting what you want in life. This is much bigger than just Max Miller. But Miller’s comments are sure symbolic of it. 2/2

This highlights a profound impact of Trump — the further normalization of violence against women. Trump got elected in spite of his long history of violence against women. He is not held accountable when he continues to abuse women. 1/2

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com · 5h ago

Max Miller on why he's staying in the race: "When we go back to 2015 and 2016, & people in the media looked at President Trump, & everyone came out with allegations. Dozens of women, dozens of crazy allegations, dozens of nasty criminal misconduct. And you know what he did? He stayed in the fight."

Disability rights. Nothing is perfect and many things are deeply flawed, but there are protections in place, improvements in care and social supports, legal advances, loud voices... It's still not great but it *is* better.

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

In 1986, contracting HIV meant you were going to die, usually slowly, painfully, and alone. Now it's a chronic illness like hypertension. In 1986, gay and lesbian couples couldn't have their relationships legally recognized and had to adopt elaborate legal workarounds.

Thanks to internet language translators, people uploading their music and music magazines, and LiveJournal, I was able to become a Japanese rock fan, communicate with other fans, and became online and offline friends with people all over the world.

Noise. Pollution. The Ozone Layer. Acid Rain. AIDS treatment. Cancer cures. Crime rates. Child abductions. As much as we consume doom and gloom in our media, humans are very, very good at solving problems when we want to. We just have to want to.

2/2 The close-ups of my wildfire embroidery. I tried to get a glowing effect with the fire and embers with colours I chose. I cut up my favourite cardigan for the rough charred ground as it was the only fabric I had with the right colour and texture but its not needed in this heat anyway...

A zoomed-in embroidery hoop containing a sewn aerial view landscape. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool. 'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

A PSA to my fellow cis people who are (or want to believe they are) trans allies If you are getting pushback from trans people and your reaction is to be all “no! not me! I’m one of the good ones!” please remember that “being one of the good ones” is something you DO, not something you ARE
