i think it’s not embellishment to say that if you were a nerdy early-90s kid patrick stewart kind of felt like a second dad to you. and you couldn’t ask for a better role model. the original antidote to toxic masculinity.

Underrated election story is California voters are about to approve Super Prop13 and permanently fuck over state and local finances for the foreseeable future, and it’s being bankrolled by billionaires mad about Prop 40

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

I grew up in a lower income immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster for "special days." But we also understood the White House should not look like the inside of Red Lobster. It's condescending to assuming working ppl are culturally illiterate bc their experience is shaped by their limited means.

Cocktails. I was born in 1977. The Long Night of Shit Drinks was in full effect and we were about 30 years away from a craft cocktail Renaissance thanks to the likes of @davidwondrich.bsky.social and Jeff Berry and so many others so that drinks could be taken for granted and declining again today

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

As always, a cocktail for Rocky's birthday. Absent Friend 1.5 oz Rhum Agricole Vieux 0.5 oz El Dorado 12yr Rum 0.25 oz Creme de Cacao 0.25 oz Ferrand Dry Curaçao 1 tsp Grenadine Rosé (to top) Stir all but wine. Strain into a chilled coupe and top with the Rosé. Garnish with an orange twist.

Most of the outrage seems to be around the fact that they did this to a citizen, but they should not be ramming a guilty person with a car either unless there are some pretty extraordinary circumstances.

Ricardo Gonzalez, a 40-year-old U.S. citizen, was riding his e-bike in Long Beach, California, when ICE agents struck him with an unmarked vehicle and tased him twice. ICE thought he was someone else.

i have said this before but “It is not permissible under the 14th Amendment for the state to alleviate racial inequality” is basically a version of Plessy v. Ferguson, which held that the 14th Amendment was not meant to equalize social relations. bsky.app/profile/mike...

If and when the Roberts Court declares race-neutral admissions policies unconstitutional, expect the majority decision to cite...RBG's solo dissent from Fisher I saying race-neutral policies were really race-conscious ones. She meant that approvingly. The Roberts supermajority...won't.

Petitioner urges that Texas’ Top Ten Percent Law and
race-blind holistic review of each application achieve
significant diversity, so the University must be content
with those alternatives. I have said before and reiterate
here that only an ostrich could regard the supposedly
neutral alternatives as race unconscious. See Gratz, 539
U. S., at 303–304, n. 10 (dissenting opinion). As Justice
Souter observed, the vaunted alternatives suffer from “the
disadvantage of deliberate obfuscation.” Id., at 297–298
(dissenting opinion).

The thing about writing counterintuitively is that it lands quite differently if your question is "why don't we have fancy ketchup like we have fancy mustard?" vs. "we need more cops"

Malcolm Gladwell points out that Berlin PD has twice the staffing of LAPD. Important other fact though is that Berlin does that with a budget that is nearly the same as LA's. Twice the staff for the same price. You'll never get LAPD to agree to that. Ever.

“In recent years, many Americans have decided that their country’s problem was that it had too many police officers, when in fact its problem was that it had too few,” Malcolm Gladwell writes:

Hey Californians! Ballot measure 40 institutes a tax on billionaires--ONLY billionaires--to fund health care for the rest of us. Ballot measures 41 and 42 were funded by billionaires and will INVALIDATE Prop 40 if they pass. Also prop 39 is aimed at restricting voting rights, fuck that one.
