the interesting thing about allowing for SOME transphobia, within reason, is that you end up bending yourself into pretzels to make statements like “sure, genital inspections for student-athletes are bad, but they’re not necessarily life-ruining so long as they’re conducted responsibly”

It's an unnecessary & humiliating obstacle, for sure, but in & of itself isn't driving anyone to suicide. Moreover, it's unclear it would even happen under Acton, while it likely would under Vivek.

I think it's hard even for raging leftists like myself to understand just how captured the media is in this country. Nothing you read or see on the news is based on things that have happened or their importance, it's driven by which politicians and journalists are in a whatsapp chat together

If Muslims or members of the Asian and Black community had set fire to white people’s homes with children running for their lives, do you think we would be discussing legitimate concerns or focussing on who radicalised them and ideological and contributing cultural factors?
This is such a phenomenal piece in Liberal Currents today. When we treat states as exceptional (and my first concern is always American Exceptionalism) our critiques of what’s dysfunctional in them suffers. When we treat them as ordinary and banal, we can speak freely.
