When the rock hit King, King turned to Prexy and told him "I thought you were this great football player!" (I met very interesting people doing my dissertation research, in some ways it was the best part of doing it)

The fetishization of it helped make Trumpism happen, I’ll buy that. But combat service, itself? I highly doubt it. Vast majority of Americans never serve and most who serve never see combat. Most Americans don’t even have close friends or family members who are combat vets.
Our parents are all dead or still working. It's no longer socially acceptable to leave very young children in the care of teenagers. Teenagers absolutely do not want to deal with older children. And adults (reasonably) expect $20+/hr. We just stay home.

A few years ago I was asked by Netflix to illustrate my greatest fear, and I did, based on something that happened to me on my dad's farm when I was a kid- I got lost in a maze of backrooms in the Victorian outbuildings, in the dark. Eventually my dad came to rescue me because he heard me screaming.

This essay gets at something that I struggled with in later seasons of The Bear: food as "experience" feels exhausting in a lot of ways, and disingenuous, and ultimately like a colossal upsell. The initial seasons were focused so much more on the food itself and for me the show lost itself.
