Advocating for safe roads and victims rights

Curb cuts are a great start! But repairing W. shouldn’t happen without safety upgrades, sidewalk widening, transit priority, and BAT lanes. This street is my neighborhood’s main street; it should be a welcoming, safe, and beautiful place instead of a suburban driver’s shortcut for Hwy. 26.

This work will begin a multi-year effort to repair failing pavement on West Burnside Street between NW 24th Pl and 2nd Ave. The corridor is a designated Emergency Transportation Route for the city, serving ambulances & other first responders. Sign up for email updates: Portland.gov/WBurnsidePaving

I'm not the first person to say this, but the bike industry in the U.S. is really missing a huge opportunity by not aggressively defending and promoting e-bikes. I think this is largely the result of it being an industry built on recreational cycling and not transit riding.

PBOT plans to repave High Crash Corridor W Burnside w/out immediate safety upgrades due to ‘critical paving needs.’ Either PBOT doesn’t see loss of life as a critical safety need or they prioritize paving over safety. Human lives shouldn’t be sacrificed for driver convenience @pbotinfo.bsky.social

A small act of kindness toward someone vulnerable just went viral, proof that you do not need grand gestures to make a real difference. Sharing food, helping a hurt animal, aiding a stranger, this is

@pbotinfo.bsky.social is at this public works committee saying that no transformative elements on W Burnside rebuilt b/c the rebuild will be phased. I’ve played this game before. Repaving will happen, in 5 years when no one’s paying attention the transformative elements will get quietly cut.

Millicent Williams - director of PBOT was interviewed by OPB and said her goal was for Portland to be the penultimate city for biking in the entire country by 2030. Pretty sure she knows what ‘penultimate’ means.

When I see "Waymo saves lives" op-eds, I always do a quick search to see what the author has written extolling protected bike lanes. Or automatic speed cameras. Or road diets. The results are always the same: Nope. Nada. Zilch.

Mayor Mamdani at the Knicks Ceremony: “We as the city are often forced to come together in the moments in tragedy, what a blessing it is to come together in a moment of joy.” Made me cry, because it’s true.

Saturday's march came after the Seattle LGBTQ Commission announced it had written a letter asking city leaders to do more to help transgender people.

If you think buying an electric car is an effective way to address the climate crisis or environmental degradation you’ve been duped by the auto industry. The only real solution is getting as many cars as reasonable off the road and ensuring active and public transit systems are at potential.

No More Freeways began filing lawsuits over the Rose Quarter project in 2019. After many ODOT withdrawals, re-filings and delays our day in court has arrived. Our first trial begins on Monday at 9am in room 14B of the Multnomah County Courthouse!

The evolutionary purpose of grief is saving life. Not only do we stifle its full expression by enforcing emotionally flat social conformity, we don't encourage the wielding of grief to inspire harm reduction NEARLY enough. We're meant to SAVE lives by exposing our whole heart through the tears.

2/2 My casual comparison of law enforcement-reported serious traffic injuries v. trauma registry data (medical experts) suggest cops are even less accurate at assessing serious injury for vehicle occupants than for bike/ped.

There seems to be a growing sentiment that it is somehow more traumatic or more fatal if you are killed in road traffic outside of a vehicle. As if the violent death is all around easier if the victim is in a car. And that justice is served for people killed or injured inside vehicles. Guys. No.
