this is why, before he was outed as a creep, louis ck was funny when he would take you to the line. he really made you understand that he knew where the line was and was great at convincing you that he was (barely) on the right side of it. the same jokes simply don't work without the trust

There’s some quote, I think from Seth Rogan, that says that it’s fine to cross lines in comedy but people want to understand that you’re aware a line exists and have an awareness and deliberateness to it, and I think that’s the reason people like Mel Brooks are so funny and dipshit stand ups aren’t

I walked away from Facebook last year when Meta's super-geniuses proclaimed that, despite my 16-year posting record, they had concluded that I was a bot, and needed to verify my humanity for them. My life has turned out to be much better without it.

Fun fact: I stopped using my Facebook account in 2020 because I got sick and tired of all of the COVID disinformation and conspiracy theories on there. This was years before I left Twitter and I've had no regrets. You can just stop using websites!!!

“Grow a thicker skin.” Why? Why does getting shouted at by people I have zero interest in talking with, who have no actual interest in learning anything, have to be part of my daily life? Don’t piss in my face and tell me it’s raining.

but the issue is that the market, at scale, ceases to really be free exchange between individuals humans, and instead becomes this strange experience where human beings are confronted by essentially an alien superintelligence invisibly structuring their lives

though actually i think it's kind of a dumb thing for a socialist to believe. one of the canards advanced by libertarians is telling you to imagine a system of free exchange in a small town, and then telling you, if there's nothing wrong with that, unrestrained markets are good at scale.

This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5). www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’

It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

Threats of Political Violence Have America’s Elected Officials Living in Fear (Gift Article)

A Times investigation has found that violent threats have become a new normal among public officials, reshaped private lives, cost millions in security and pushed people out of office.

Said in a spirit of inclusive generosity— a lot of folks who love a ideal form of democracy (like a well-informed student council, or an intelligent small nation of legislators) aren’t ready for the heroic emotional labor of engaging with actual existing people.

She (and frankly the entire example of Brazilian national elections) should immediately be deployed against anyone who thinks compulsory voting is a solution for this country's woes

The only common thread I found among these voters was they thought they were smart by "staying out of it" and then complaining non stop about things. I guess I learned cynicism is cheap, but earnestness and following through are the rare qualities in people.

I've worked and volunteered at the local level and my experience is that my energy was best used motivating the base and getting them to talk with their friends. Going after these "undecideds" was like boxing a glacier and it didn't feel like much of a return on it.

Of all the imaginary skills that voters attribute to Trump, “a businessman’s ability to pick good people creatively and hold them accountable for good work” might be the most imaginary, against stiff competition

Since Mykhailo Drapatyi took up the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian 🇺🇦 Army, a series of new reforms happened 1. Command style 2. Command structure 3. Purge and renewal of the officer corps 4. Systemic reforms 5. Tactical doctrine
