Some initial thoughts, and a complicated mix of feelings. Wow. I mean, Erdos problems are cool (I genuinely mean that), I didn't know about the Jacobian conjecture before it got disproved. But this newest batch from OpenAI hits home in a way the previous announcements did not.

I realize the powers of LA and NYC's mayorship are vastly different, but just having a person like this articulating a vision of what progressive governance actually looks like would be massive for California politics. We need to dream bigger than starting a nonprofit or planning a protest.

Can anyone explain to me why the Flyaway bus makes separate dropoff and pickup loops around LAX? The whole loop + deadhead duplicates 30 minutes of valuable schedule time. Couldn't they just loop around the bottom level once and departing flight pax can just go up the escalators? This feels insane.
Street homelessness in LA rose 8%. This problem isn't unsolvable. It's mismanaged. Another approach is possible, and the results in my council district prove it. Street homelessness is down 49% in CD4, and I will bring the same approach citywide as your next mayor.

There are very few programs in Los Angeles that are this broadly loved, this successful, and this cost-effective. We should be working toward having a CicLAvia every week—not wondering if we'll have one at all. How you can help today:

Grade inflation is roughly universal, deeply corrupt, profoundly inequitable, and overall impossible to reset. All this disingenuous blather about what is to be done when the solution is right there: replace grades with narrative evaluations.
this is absolutely my hobbyhorse but nothing I've seen yet has convinced me that we do a good job of evaluating how the sort of solution manifold of LLMs diverges from that of humans and that strikes me as so much more important than pure performance

The line is gigantic, and it’s unknown whether everyone will get in but “there are way more people here than there are seats.”
