i think about form size a lot, bouncing between epic fantasy series and standalones, short stories, and novellas. generally, i’m pretty disinterested in the categories themselves, but i’m interested in using the space well, to best effect. so how do you write a good story at any length?

anyone have any favorite resources about writing a novella (vs a novel)—like what makes a good novella, what uses the form well, etc? I've READ plenty of them but if you asked me what the difference is between one and a novel I would still just say "they're shorter" even though I know there's more.

it’s never too late to start learning how to draw - and as frustrating as it sounds, it’s a lifelong endeavor. if you pick up the pen today, you will be experiencing the same emotions, setbacks, euphoria, and accomplishments as someone who is sitting down for the 1826th consecutive day.

It’s Trans Day of Visibility! Buying a book by a trans author is great, but don’t stop there! Make sure to call your representatives. Support your local trans communities. Donate to mutual aid organizations. If we’re going to make it through this we need you to do more than post on social media!

You do not have to accept repeat Covid infections as inevitable. Mitigations work. Layers work best. Get your booster. Clean & ventilate the air. Test and stay home when sick. Perhaps most important of all, wear a well fitted N95. It protects you & those around you. Community care can save us!

who was going to warn me that writing my characters being kind and compassionate to each other would help me learn to be kinder and more compassionate to myself. what on earth.

No single photograph -- not even the Napalm Girl photograph -- could change the course of the war. And if you talk to Americans today, the true cost of Vietnam to them is American lives lost, not the horror that was inflicted on the Vietnamese.

I don’t want to “streamline” my writing. I don’t want to “increase my output.” I don’t want to “write a novel with one click.” I want to write stuff only I can write. I want to read and write novels with soul and heart and a unique voice. Fuck AI. Long live real writers.

I could absolutely screech with joy because: Hollow is on Netgalley!!!! Ahhh!! And not only is Hollow on Netgalley, but it’s on the front page of most requested horror books!! 😭😭😭 you can request Hollow now!!!

I can never advocate for the "write every day" advice. I think every writer should have a day during the week where they engage in the enjoyment of experiencing art in lieu of creating it.

the four types of book characters i write - self-deprecating rich asshole with a heart of gold - lesbian hooligan who's trying her best but only makes things worse - narrative foil to the protagonist who is just them except worse - aloof but secretly reverent love interest

the four types of book characters I write - grumpy anxious old gay man - aggressively positive adoptive grandma - sweet lil ND guy who infodumps about his favorite topics - angry young girl who consistently makes bad decisions

Writers: before you sign a contract with a publisher, make sure AI isn't replacing your illustrator, your translator, your editor, your jacket designer. Readers: if you're thinking of buying a book, do the same. Refuse. Resist. If AI garbage doesn't sell, people will stop making it.

It’s important to pay attention to the fact that there are simultaneous efforts to criminalize mask-wearing by citizens and to standardize the wearing of face-obscuring gaiters by people purporting to be law enforcement.

Nighttime reminder: It’s okay to rest. You’ve made it through the day, and that’s enough. You’re allowed to log off, breathe deeply, and just be. No goals, no pressure. Let the quiet settle in. Wrap yourself in softness, whatever that means for you. You deserve peace tonight.
