In other Michigan news, the state looks set to elect it's first transgender lawmaker. Joanna Whaley won her Democratic primary and will compete in November for a state house seat, beating a primary opponent who tried and failed to disqualify her for not running under her deadname

And I think it's notable that the actual candidates recognize this, know that the factions have far more in common than separates them, and are quickly moving to mend fences and look toward winning in November.

My ice-cold boring take that will definitely not go viral is that a primary result with a margin of victory of roughly 1 percent tells you precisely nothing about The Future Of The Party.

Yeah for all my jokes, I actually think this has a chance to be a pretty good outcome for the party overall. A more conciliatory AES and a party establishment which doesn’t feel doomed may actually be pretty good for focusing on the GOP

I don’t think there’s enough vote for Stevens left but this will be a close result. My hope is that the El-Sayed/DSA/far left contingent don’t get despondent but realize that both factions need each other. It’s time to cut the shit and fight MAGA, not Democrats.

I'll be disappointed if Stevens wins, but mostly what you should take away from tonight is that the coalition really is divided between factions with lots of genuine support, we can't wish the other side away, and we're all going to have to learn to live with each other if we want to win.

oh good, she’s infantilizing a conspiracy theory, instead of, you know, talking about real issues like an adult MAHA is never going to vote for her & we cannot share a party tent with people that think vaccines are dangerous, that antidepressants are evil, etc. she is NOT built for this

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez@ocasio-cortez.house.gov · 2d ago

There is pervasive corruption across our healthcare and agricultural systems that defy party lines. I meet with MAHA activists because a lot of their concerns are bipartisan issues that major corporations paint as partisan. The fight isn't left and right, it's top and bottom.

This is the problem with populism: you cannot build a republic on a foundation of conspiracies. Corruption and special interests are real challenges, but reducing politics to “us” against “them” infantilizes the electorate and sows the seeds of authoritarian rule.

humans aren't naturally particularly good or bad. the great labor of each of our lives is to *make* ourselves good, and help the people around us do the same so that someday together we can build a better world. Being awful to random people online constantly just drags you & the world the other way

contrary to what much of this site believes, your actions (in addition to, and more than your intent) matter and will modify who you are. treating people online like shit will eventually make you a worse person IRL. in order to be good you have to practice at being good.

I know one very religious gay guy (former Catholic) who won’t have anal sex until marriage w/ a man bc he thinks premarital sex would be a degrading sin, but loves to watch gay porn, the incongruous sexual ethics is fascinating “I don’t fight others bc violence is wrong but I love gladiator fights”

The difference between Will Stancil and Kat Abughazaleh is that Kat used a bad faith quote tweet dunk on Will to solicit cash donations to her campaign consulting business and Will refuses to let anyone give him money to fix the slashed tires on the car he chased ICE agents around in.

Politics aside, do people believe city-run grocery stores with deeply discounted prices are a good POLICY idea? What are they intended to accomplish, in your view? What problem do they solve?
Would you implement them if not running for election? I'm sincerely curious in people's answers here.

sorry for taking the bait, but if you like feeding people you should check out (and maybe donate a couple bucks!) to my organization Kapow which is integrating mutual aid + direct action in campaigns across the country:)Thereats

The claim that "AIPAC bought" the election Abughazaleh lost — to a candidate who accepted zero dollars from AIPAC — is absurd on its face. She's not stupid. She surely knows that. Unfortunately that leaves only darker explanations for this outrageous statement, and none of them are flattering to her
