I think my biggest Old Person complaint is that we don’t need that many data centers because, quite frankly, not everything needs to be In The Cloud. This isn’t 2015 anymore, I can buy a 2tb thumb drive, there’s no reason I need to save my entire documents folder to a server, Microsoft.

My whole company was offsite last week so there was nobody to water, but timelines *really* needed live plants this week. I’m quite pleased with my very janky self-watering semihydroponic system! The soy boys germinated (ok, 75% is not great but better than 0) and are growing! Hope they nodulate🤞🌿

This is particularly salient with how vulnerable American science is right now and how ACS hasn't seemed to rise to the moment. And while ACS has grown to a big international community, that hardly feels like *the point to make* given what's happening here is only unique in intensity, not direction
Okay DailyCal, lets play a game. Why would a merchant's sales drop 50% between May and June just several blocks from UC Berkeley? A) New housing construction scares away customers. B) Burned buildings attract customers. C) More than half the population South of Campus is gone for the summer.
Speaking for myself, I'm opposed to branding efforts that try to make the illusion of change without making substantive and concrete steps to cause change. Because I expect more from a scientific organization and nonprofit. If as part of real change, sure. As a vapid corporate exercise, no.
And, to be clear, I’m not categoricaly opposed to these branding efforts, but I AM opposed to spending member dollars on vapid bullsh!t like this.

Enrico🐀@redbassett.com · 6d agoI'm not being facetious, this is a sincere take, but after spending many many hours over the years mulling solutions to distracted drivers, I've firmly landed on not removing the distracted part but rather the driver part. We need solutions to reduce phone use driving, but also driving.
“Just use noncombustible materials” is complicated in CA by the fact that timber is one of the most earthquake-safe building materials, and the cost of noncombustible, earthquake-safe alternatives like reinforced concrete and steel only pencil out for the largest projects.
Now is a good reminder that machine learning is a rebranding of statistical learning. Reinforcement learning is something I first came across in control theory. Many ML formulations are from information theory, a much more theoretically grounded discipline that's been around for decades.

It's that people see them reading and writing and reasoning and scheming and they realize that the stochastic-parrots framing is outdated and inadequate to the moment
I think about this every time I hear from a US traffic engineer about why they can’t implement a bikeway upgrade, citing the importance of adherence to standards. Standards that result in these outcomes *should* be questioned.
