What if Boston had a mayor who wanted the city to improve things like New York has?
We're overhauling 116th Street to make your bus faster: 2.5 miles of new bus lanes. Queue jumps that give buses a green light before other vehicles at intersections. Protected bike lanes. 35,000 square feet of new pedestrian space.

I am speaking as a Boston resident, a transportation professional, and former Planning Department staff who served as PLAN: East Boston transportation project manager and transportation reviewer for 355 Bennington: this decision is borderline cruel, completely tone deaf, and legally problematic.

Why Big Belly trash compactors so often seem stuffed and ignored: It takes just one pizza box for indigestion

Open streets are lovely! I wish we had a mayor who could imagine removing cars from public spaces on more than an occasional Sunday. A lot of these places (especially Newbury St) should be car free every day.

It does seem weird that the mayor spoke on Louisa's death a week ago and said the city was taking action and nothing has happened since
This letter convinces me that Wu does not plan to change her approach to street safety, continuing to prioritize neighborhood groups complaints and “beauty” over safety. If I worked for the Mayor, after reading this letter, I’d probably plan to quit. It shows her priorities clearly enough.
Wu released a letter pledging the city will install more permanent “cast-in-place” concrete barriers along bike lanes, consult with outside advisors, develop truck safety legislation and evaluate the intersection where cycling advocate Louisa Gag was killed.
