Had a relatively quiet weekend (much needed after having to work the previous weekend), but managed to fit in a #plasmaDonation. The last cycle was a very brief one (only needed 2 more mL of plasma).
Rice, red curry chicken with kumara (I thought I had potato, but no, it was kumara), eggplant sambal from Ho Ciak (Albert St, Auckland CBD), mushroom & bokchoy soup. #cookingDiary #kai #food🍜 🍽️
A quick word on Taco Bell: That's where we found the suspected lettuce, and it's not bc Taco Bell is gross. It's bc Taco Bell is REALLY GOOD at tracing product! Keeping track of exactly where they got their ingredients, & exactly what restaurants each shipment of ingredients went to!
It was a fine morning at the Whau River mouth. The sky was clear & the rising sun's light made the sky on the horizon golden. #river #WhauRiver #publicTransport #Auckland #TamakiMakaurau #bus #somethingBeautiful #aucklandscenes

Finally, there's an *economic* coin-trick: "AI will destroy jobs." Sure, yes, AI is destroying jobs. But there's a vast difference between "You got fired because an AI can do your job" and "You got fired because your boss was convinced that the AI can do your job, even though it *cannot*." 45/
Wāhine & Horotiu, the two new sculptures on Victoria Street outside the (opening soon?!) Te Waihorotiu Station. Seen on a slightly wet winter morning. ourauckland.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/news/2026/07... #Auckland #TamakiMakaurau #TrainStation #somethingBeautiful #aucklandscenes
Every now and then someone takes a run at me along the lines of "I don't understand why you, a scifi writer, don't appreciate 'AI'," and I'm all, motherfucker, it's *because* I'm a science fiction writer I have the positions I have, how many times do we have to fucking yell "torment nexus," my dude
"I don't understand why you, a fantasy writer, don't appreciate the value of making bargains with the fae."

Bluesky is a "liberal bubble" because fascist chuds can't get traction without algorithmic assistance and because people here trained themselves to block "debate me" trybois the instant they roll up
Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."

For today’s antidote to the horrors, I recommend watching gold-medal-winning Eliza McCartney addressing the NZ commonwealth games team in te reo Māori www.instagram.com/reel/Dbhr2mR...

Didn't realise I blew past this milestone: Gym Leader badge hit 1 million hours defending gyms (1,000,330 to be precise). #PokemonGO #pokemon [Image is a Pokemon GO screencap showing Gym Leader badge for defending gyms at 1,000,330 hours.]

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
Let’s be clear here, when scientists say mistakes were made at the start of the pandemic, we DO NOT mean that we did too much. We mean not socially distancing quickly enough, not making tests widely available, and not acknowledging COVID is airborne and distributing N95 masks to everyone.
The problem with New Zealand getting rid of the Marsden (which funded basic research), is that you cannot 'back winners', because you cannot predict how basic science can result in world changing innovation.
PCR ➡️ "what's that stuff floating on those geothermal pools?" warfarin ➡️ "hey why do the cattle grazing on sweet clover keep dying of internal bleeding?" GFP ➡️ "how do you think those jellyfish glow?" CRISPR ➡️ "hey, why do you think these bacteria have repeating palindromic DNA sequences?"
