Nerd. Neurotic. Retired public defender. I'm sure these three things have nary a thing to do with one another.

• Cormac McCarthy, BLOOD MERIDIAN • David Foster Wallace, GIRL WITH CURIOUS HAIR • Phillip K. Dick, VALIS • Roald Dahl, THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR AND SIX MORE • Ezra Pound, THE CANTOS (Yes, I'm including two anthologies and an epic poem; sue me.)

They should have The Doctor exiled to Earth, forced to work with a government agency that defends humanity against alien invasions, and maybe The Doctor could drive a funny car to get from gravel quarry to gravel quarry.

Solving the "problems" currently plaguing Doctor Who will take time, the series' former showrunner Chris Chibnall has cautioned, explaining that the show's most pressing issue now is "primarily about money." https://bit.ly/3RUqeI6

There are at least *three* right-wing text-based social media sites, one owned by The Actual President, another by the richest man in history, and all of which openly foster white supremacy. But those are not the ones every op-ed page in the western world is sneering about

Bluesky is a "liberal bubble" because fascist chuds can't get traction without algorithmic assistance and because people here trained themselves to block "debate me" trybois the instant they roll up

Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."

A chronically annoying thing about the enshittification of search is you look a thing up for research/reference purposes then have to spend unnecessary time refining the search to get rid of shopping results.

I'm not sure I understand the question, frankly. I don't see lumping together politics and ideology when much of Trumpism is a non-ideological grift and much is merely fascism, which is arguably an aesthetic, not a genuine ideology. And successful how? At winning elections? Implementing an agenda?

Something I think that underlies a lot of debates within the Democratic party and center-left right now is whether or not you think Trumpism has been successful as a political and ideological project. (Not, obviously, whether it's been good or not).

Nostalgia is bad, romanticization is worse. Sometimes the reason we have a situation that really sucks is because things used to really suck, then someone improved them, then someone figured out how to make the improvements really suck, too; because humans are prone to screw ourselves like that.

Eddie Murphy, 1990: "I don't want to say who was guilty or who was innocent. But if you're directing a movie and two kids get their heads chopped off at fucking twelve o'clock at night when there ain't supposed to be kids working, and you said, 'Action!' then you have some sort of responsibility."

🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY to John Landis, turning 76 today (August 3, 1950)! Well known for classic Horror/Sci-Fi films like "Schlock" (1973), "An American Werewolf in London" (1981), "Twilight Zone: The Movie" (1983), "Innocent Blood" (1992) & two episodes of the TV series "Masters of Horror" (2005/2006)!

Just got an announcement that Microsoft Edge is going to lose its insanely good Drop feature, shortly after it lost its extremely useful sidebar feature. Gotta say I'm loving the way Microsoft keeps cutting useful features from its app while adding Copilot malware I have to ferret out and stomp on.

The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.

If you’re a Gondorian soldier your experience with hobbits is a tiny guy shows up with a wizard and is immediately taken in the Steward’s counsel. He saves Faramir when the Steward goes mad. A second tiny guy arrives with the Rohirrim and kills the Witch King. The first one then goes on campaign …
