I talk a lot about major transport investment, but one of the biggest bangs for the buck policy-wise would be a full pavement parking ban and more rigid enforcement of traffic rules. Enforcement is so lax that this stuff is just completely normalised now, and it's unacceptable.

Hi @islington-council.bsky.social @hackneycouncil.bsky.social @tflondon.bsky.social. Can you please put a yellow box at this junction of Balls Pond Rd and Culford Rd. Vehicles keep blocking access to and from the cycle track. @cycleislington.uk @hackneycycling.org.uk @willnorman.co.uk
I see we are back into one of the intermittent periods of media moral panics about cycling. It is presumably a matter of days before someone calls for mandatory registration and insurance. Please do wake me up if anyone writes something we haven't already read 10,000 times before.
Having lost at appeal, Tower Hamlets is taking this case to the Supreme Court, so that they can rip out LTNs that have been funded by the Mayor of London. So I've contributed again to the defence - we don't want a precedent to be set! www.crowdjustice.com/case/defendi...

This is an outrageous failure from Andy Burnham and this Labour Government. He says they "don't know the remedy." It's obvious to almost anyone. Nationalise water companies. Tax fossil fuel companies. Invest in renewables. Labour selling us down the river to please their donors as country burns.
Downing Street's press release for Burnham's "emergency" Cobra meeting on the drought didn't even mention climate, with the Prime Minister blaming the growing numbers of wildfires on disposable barbecues. He's since appeared on GB News this afternoon to talk about migrant camps
This one is important because MMT is. I used AI, among other tools, when creating this post. I also used a word processor and about 50 years of experience writing about these issues. Drawing the infographic was the smallest part, and I had no budget to do it any other way.
To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.
Cities dismantled their tram networks to become “motor cities of the future”. The result? You could travel further within 30 mins via public transport in 1957 than you can in 2026. Cities are seeking billions to rebuild networks. Incredible piece of work this.
If you stood on Briggate at 8am on a weekday in 1957, and stood there again in 2026, in which year could you reach more of the city in half an hour? Samuel Bancroft has crunched the numbers. Since the 1950s, Leeds has got bigger - but the city has effectively shrunk.
What an awful choice of chancellor. Had some optimism for a while when it looked like Miliband, but then he started talking about drilling for oil and it still wasn't enough, so we end up with someone who has no ideas or instincts except far right authoritarianism. 😡
"City relieved" = Burnham's government won't challenge the power of the bankers, or tax their wealth. Who is choosing our politicians - the people or the banking sector?
We discussed this subject this morning as well, with some figures of actually how busy it is - but just with pedestrians and cyclists instead of vehicles. We have a sensor there showing over 12,000 commutes daily over the bridge. Not closed at all telraam.net/en/location/...
For those of you not in the UK, this is the former health secretary. If he doesn’t understand how enabling walking and cycling will save the NHS and social care services multiples of that £4.5bn then it really shows he learnt nothing during his near 2 years in the role.
Hmm. If only there was a free transport mode teenagers could use that meant a 3 mile journey took 15 minutes instead of an hour. That if course depends if there is a safe cycle route. But cycling is so often ignored by people when it comes to transport options. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Amazing how stupid and / or gullible the average American is ... though I suspect us Brits aren't far behind ...
I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”
I can’t believe this was packed with cars and parked cars. No one would want that back.
🚲️ Did you know that in the last nine years, London's cycle network has expanded by 340km? This kind of incredible transformation doesn't happen by accident - it takes sustained campaigning, and that campaigning is only possible because of LCC members 🤝 Support our work and join today... 👇️

perfect weather last night for a bike ride home
Something I've been thinking about is how safe streets advocates are treated as hysterical and dramatic for pointing out that drivers should stop killing us, yet the people fomenting a moral panic about e-bikes are treated as reasonable and their concerns are taken seriously.
Used cooking oil & animal fat for SAF? UK road sector already uses more than we produce. Diverting it to aviation (the least efficient user) just pushes demand for virgin palm oil elsewhere. It’s not waste it’s musical chairs with forests. #SAF
London is proving that sustained action on road safety delivers real change. By investing in better junctions, safer speeds and HGV safety standards, we’re building a city you can move around with confidence. Low rates are a start, but our goal is zero. Because every journey should end safely.
Our dependency on fossil fuels makes us vulnerable. Wars across the world are pushing up prices for households in the UK. Why keep waiting for the next crisis? We need to transition to clean power as fast as we can to protect people and our economy. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Oh yes, one of my top pet peeves also! Just ahead of stopping *past* the lights, so they have no idea when the light goes green, and are overtaken by those who stopped in the right place! Minor, but also unnecessary ...
On a *very* petty note, what's with the increasing habit of some cyclists to stop right in front of the low-level, bike-sequence traffic lights so no one else can see them, rather than a metre or so back on the line?
London needs a safe, connected cycle network! Great to see tri-borough momentum: Haringey, Islington and Hackney cabinet leads + LCC members visited the incomplete C50 route which ends dangerously at Finsbury Park bridge. Hi @willnorman.co.uk + @sebdance.bsky.social how soon can you start here?
Out in Finsbury Park today with our neighbours @islington-council.bsky.social @rowchampion.bsky.social and Haringey Council’s Cllr Ibrahim Ali and @londoncycling.bsky.social looking at how to work with Transport for London to extend Cycleway C50 so we can ride safely through all of our boroughs.
